Default Well...So Much For Sleeping In!

Last April I went to work for GDC, a company here in Fort Worth as a design checker for the new Air Force One, VC-25B. After one month, Boeing and the company got into a pissing contest. Boeing won and terminated the contract. End result? 80 people laid off. This after the layoff of 150 people at my previous company the year before. I just laughed...you can't make this shit up. For the last several months I've been going between "you really should go back to work" and "aww who gives a ****".

However...when companies start waving stupid money at you (as in, "you're really stupid if you don't take this money"), flat out greed kicks in and "who gives a ****" loses. Datawiz can probably confirm this.

In a few weeks I'll be starting at Gulfstream Aviation here in Dallas as either a design checker or design engineer. Depends on company needs. I'll be working on the brand new G800 Private Jet and possibly some work on the G400. I'll be a contractor (my preference) and the length of the contract is said to be several years. I still have one more interview to do with another company, but my friends and family would line up to pitchfork me if I didn't take this. Especially my daughter, who loves money.

Other cool thing is that I'll be working with my old boss and several co-workers who were laid-off with me at GDC.

Looks like I can shelve my plan to stand at the freeway offramp near my house with a sign that says "Mercedes needs annual service. Anything helps. God Bless"

I sh!t you not, there’s a guy that routinely stands with a cardboard sign in the median (which is apparently legal - the cops know who he is but can’t do anything unless he’s actually in the roadway) at a shopping plaza nearby, collects $ from passers-by…then at the end of the day, walks across to the commuter lot and drives home in his silver Mercedes.

Congrats and best wishes on the new gig.

I like making stupid money, and there is a very good possibility of getting promoted to director this summer...another $100k minimum.

Congrats on the gig...and greed. My daughter loves money too, but I'm blessed she makes her own money, and is extremely conservative.

I too have recently been approached by my previous employer. I was making a little more than my US Senators when I left and expect in this economy I could get a bump into the twos. I told him I was flattered, but that I like sleeping in…

You can always make more money…you can’t make more time.

Good on ya IC.

Have you seen this new show on Netflix -Downfall; The Case Against Boeing. It’s pretty critical of Boeing.

Congrats.

It doesn’t end with the daughter. Now my grandkids are older and the gifts are way more expensive. Earn double what you think you will need for retirement.

What’s that sleeping in you mentioned? I’m retired and I usually wake up around 5. I guess I just like those sunrises that tell me I’m still alive.

Thanks to all for the well-wishes. This might just be a lot of fun.

People would be amazed at how many do this. That's why I never give money. You want my money? You'd better be doing something to earn it. Standing on a corner with a sign isn't a vocation. It's GoFundMe Live.

Gordon Gekko is one of my heroes. Fortunately both my kids are doing well and are self-sufficient, productive members of society. I blame my daughter's love of money on my mom.

Yes...I'm afraid the Korn Ferry Tour will just have to wait.

When I get up and stretch, my body has an achy way of reminding me that I'm still alive. No retirement plans here. I like what I do and am well paid for it, so I see no reason to stop. Sitting in my garage "tinkering" isn't my idea of fun.

Yeah I watched it. No surprises there. They're no different than any other large company. I've worked with Boeing on several occasions and it amazes me how they can combine brilliance and arrogance so seamlessly.

Sleeping in is over-rated. Just woke up to a flamed out heater. Judging by the temp in here it was off for at least a couple hours. Should have topped it off before passing out. It's 19 degrees outside

No small factor in this was the merger with McDonnell Douglas. Prior to, it sounded like Boeing was a pretty good company.
