Leaving my garden...
What is the best way to keep plants alive while we are gone for three weeks? These are all potted (the ones in the ground have sprinklers) and can easily be moved so they are not in the direct sun if you all think that would be better.
Our roommate will be around while we are gone but he is already taking care of a lot for us so if there is another way I would rather not have him worry about them. |

Having the ROOMMATE see if they need water a few times a week is asking too much? Will said ROOMMATE be eating any of the results of said garden?

Place them in the garden behind the ones in the ground if they are tall enough to block direct sunlight if that's a bad thing.

I did not think about that...thanks. I don't have a ton of room but this might work.
He is a super nice guy and I know he will do it if I ask...I am just feeling like we are already asking him to take care of other things so if there was another option I would take it. |

I would just try to organize the best you can so they can take care of themselves and ask him to keep an eye on them because you can't be sure that they will be OK left entirely alone for three weeks without some sort of manual watering. Make sure there is a watering can that is easily refilled handy, or a hose with sprinkler wand.

I was thinking about just moving the pots out to where the other ones are (by the sprinklers) but I still have a few that I would rather not leave. The planted garden is out front so anyone could just take them. For the most part I am not worried but I have some really expensive pots (my friend's husband's store imports pots from Italy) that I don't want to chance getting stolen.

Plus, being in Cali, I'd worry more about expensive pot getting stolen before somebody steals expensive pots |

Over $750 a month goes straight into our buying a home fund instead of to the owner of our condo - it is worth it to us. You do what you have to do to get what you want. |

Here is what you do. get this stuff. You will need a timer, a quarter inch tubing fitting for a hose bib and 1/4 inch tubing and misters. I use a timer that I found in the hose section of home depot or lowes. about 30 bucks.
Not only is it great when you are gone but also when you are at home. I have a system in Alabama for my herb garden and a system in Florida for my potted lemon trees. Works great. Mister Landscaper Drip Irrigation. Kits to get Started |

I have a crap ton of those Aqua Globe things that I bought off of Woot (and then got more in a bag of crap). Let me know if you want some. My wife would be happy if I got rid of a bunch.

When we buy a house it will depend all on what the prices do. Mark follows housing blogs and news very closely and his estimate is 3 years...maybe up to 5. Quote:

We use the Aqua globes for the plants at our lake house. I wouldn't trust them for more than a week. Our neighbors refill them if we don't make it up for some reason.

Put a soaker hose between them and let the good times roll.
