That suk, are you getting caught up it the cuts?

He wants to cut contractors 10 percent accross DOD (which might affect me).

Also, he is also trying to cut healthcare (tricare) which means retirees might be dropped or have to pay even more.

That's part of the reason I stayed in for 20, was the healthcare coverage for retirees. Hope he doesn't succeed with any of these cuts, JFCOM or Tricare. That's not going to help the economy any with all those people out of work.

DoD has been trying to get rid of retiree Tricare for several years now. Right now it is just on the plate again, no action being taken yet.

Around me they have been cutting contractor jobs and trying to replace with Civil Service but they are having a hard time getting anyone to take the jobs as they do not pay as well. One position that has been on the books for at least nine years that I am aware of has only been filled for two of the years and he recently quit taking a better paying job.

Which one, contractor jobs being cut or open civil service job unfilled? I don't want to say the companies being cut here on the forum, these guys/gals I work with and they are being told their contract is not being renewed, not good times around work.

The civil service job market is selective on who they hire, you better know someone to get hired. A big problem for the kind of work I do is the security clearance, if you don't have the right clearance you won't be considered and if you do then it could be a bidding war over the right person.

JFCOM simply imploded on itself. It was a much better mission when it was USACOM prior to 1999. I was there active duty USACOM 98-01 and once the change to JFCOM and stand up of NORTHCOM it was obivious even then it was an effort in duplication. Unfortunately, contractors are paid better than their Civil Service counterparts and therefore the danger in contracting work; good pay, little job security.

Sorry to all you guys and gals out there this is going to hurt....I think the numbers are what, 5-6K employees "internally"?, but it is also going to impact local businesses as well. Think of how many of those people run out to grab a meal a couple if not every day they work...those lost chow hounds are going to hurt local restaurants, not to mention lost local/state tax $$$ from meal taxes, etc....

....but don't worry, "it is for the best"
