By
Viliyana Filipova
– July 8, 2013

The cement carrier Cyprus Cement had accident in the marine of Levanger caving collision with several pleasure boats, caused by bow thruster failure. The cargo ship crushed 10-15 boats into the marine in the Norwegian city, trying to leave the port. The vessel had a tug assistance during the maneuvering, but unfortunately due to the delayed reaction was not able to stop its speed. The marina, docks and several boats were damages seriously but fortunately there were no seriously injured people during the accident. The police and fire department started cleaning of the damages over the port, which were valued of more than 1 million Norwegian crowns. The cement carrier Cyprus Cement was trying to leave the port in spite of the accident, but was stopped by the Coast Guard and detained for inspection and investigation for the collision.

The cement carrier Cyprus Cement (IMO: 9037173) has overall length of 97.00 m, moulded beam of 17.00 m and maximum draft of 4.70 m. The cargo ship has deadweight of 4,555 DWT and gross tonnage of 4,096 GRT. The vessel was built in Damen Shipyard Galati, Romania in 2002 and passed all necessary surveys and safety checks correctly a few months ago. The cement carrier is owned and managed by the Norwegian company Kgj Cement Fleet Management.

With the above in mind, it appears like a "Hit & Run" accident.

I don't know jack about bow thrusters but maybe they're electrical?

Corrosion can short out an electric motor making them come to life on their own and unable to be stopped. Nothing good can come from that

Seen it happen to a winch onboard the icebreaker. I was pounding the kill button and (and every other button) but the thing just kept running to the stops. Snapped the cable and dropped the bow of a motor lifeboat nearly on top of me. Split open a half inch thick steel plate deck

Should have had more than one tug assisting it snd it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

If they were trying to leave the scene of the crime, I doubt it was the thruster. They are coming up with a BS story to cover their asses.

Seems like a bad idea to mix cargo and pleasure craft.

When it's working properly, the bow thruster and the prop ( plus the tugboats) with allow for maneuvering in shorter spaces.

However, once you get a ship moving in the wrong direction, the momentum keeps it moving for a while.

Don't NEED to turn your head much IF you have properly adjusted BUBBLE mirrors.....and learn how to drive with them....I been using them for decades....

It's like you know your perspective's fucked so you just let your hands work the controls as if you were straight."
