I hate moving

I took all the pictures off the walls tonite, packed a travel bag and put a few uniforms and my gun in the car. Now I just have to wait for the packing crew tomorrow.

After many military moves over a 22 year career-- which were always a PITA, I found moving yourself makes you wish Uncle Sugar was doing it.

10 homes in 21 years...and several in between moves...and a new one about to get started.

you get used to it when it's your business.

although at 50 y/o, it is starting to get old.

my wife commented: "all these years we been floating around dropping buoys...can we drop anchor on the new one for a while?"

Moving to VA, this will be the 3rd time in 4 years. This will be one of the last ones before I retire. I moved my own stuff once, I'll never do that again.

DITY moves suck the wanky big time. If the ,mil is paaying to move you then let them do the work. Plus, if anything gets daamaged, lost, etc... it gets replaced wherre as a DITY move puts everything on you.

my first move out... was from my parents home to my just-purchased house. Everything I owned fit into the trunk of my 1971 Plymouth Road Runner.

17 years later move from there to current residence; took two fooking Uhauls and a lot of nephews

Never again; I'll die in this house.

In the Navy you can do a thing they call homesteading. It works best in either San Diego, CA or Norfolk, VA. During a Navy career you will rotate between sea duty, normally assigned to a ship, and shore duty, a land based duty station.

Since there are hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of shore duty billets available in those locations the odds are you can remain there for most of your career. That allows the family to live a fairly normal life and not be uprooted numerous times. It also allows you to invest in a home without the worry of needing to sell it too soon.

Of course during your sea duty tour you will still have the separation from family but that's the life.

Partial DITY is the way to go, Bro!! Pack up all the stuff the movers will likely steal or break and have the Navy pay you for that, then have the movers move all rest ... Works great !!
