Default What does it mean to be a social conservative?

I heard a speech this weekend in which Michelle Bachmann said "I've always been proud to be a social conservative.". These days it seems to me definitions of political beliefs or positions as more blurred than ever before. I'm not sure I really know anymore what a social conservative is.

So, what does it mean to the VBOT'ers to be a social conservative?

IMHO, the two main issues that pop out as "socially conservative" these days are:

1) pro-life
2) anti-gay marriage

There are several others, but they don't play as well in the media because there's not as much controversy involved.

A true social conservative is one who feels the country went krazy in the 60's with all that feel good crap legislation

which should ALL be repealed BTW....

I don't usually turn to wikipedia, but I think somebody there summed it up rather nicely...

Quote:
...a political and often morally-influenced ideology that often takes the position that the federal government should have a limited role in the affairs of its citizens, where the greater sphere of influence and jurisdiction would be maintained by state and local government.
Quote:
Social conservatism is often associated with the preservation of traditional values, primarily in the context of local laws and ordinances. In the mid to late 20th century, the notion of preserving traditional values was seen by many social conservatives as an ideal that had been gradually eroded by a number of federal legislative passages and Supreme Court decisions...

4) Teaching abstinence only
5) Pro strong drug laws
6) Against any and all gun laws
7) All the god stuff in the pledge, money, in holiday celebrations, etc.
8) Against gay adoption

This one does get some play at times.
4) Teaching abstinence only
Another one that's not as pervasive, but does pop up. Mostly among the Catholics on the far right.
5) Pro strong drug laws
Not as popular as you'd think. One reason it doesn't get as much attention anymore.
6) Against any and all gun laws
False. Pro-second amendment, true.
7) All the god stuff in the pledge, money, in holiday celebrations, etc.
This one isn't restricted to social conservatives...
8) Against gay adoption
Another one that is true, but doesn't get as much play as the marriage issue.
There are even more, but it's mainly the two I listed that get day-to-day media coverage.

im a social liberal but a fiscal conservative

I think everyone should have food, housing and health care. I just think you should have a job and pay for it yourself.

Traditional moral values.

while those on the left believe it should be one big free for all plastered on every billboard, I believe what people do should be kept to themself and not spread as a dang religion like what happened in the sixties.

I'm against abortion

I'm against gay marriage

I'm against any gun law to include those who have been convicted of a crime

I believe creationism should be mentioned, not taught, in school

I believe if a person wants to pay for sex they should be allowed. hell we pay for it anyway.

I believe liberalism should be declared illegal and liberals should be sent to an insane asylum.

i hate the 60's dopester hippies, especially the radicals.

they completely ****ed up this nation, they ****ed up everything they touched.

not sure what that makes me, as i'm a libertarian on most social issues.

I agree, I think drugs should be legalized and taxed, I could care less about Roe/Wade, leave it the way it IS.....CASE CLOSED....
I don't care a wit damn if queers get married or not....their freeking problem, or not....

I think ALL welfare needs be cut off....ALL of it, especially to illegals....

if there no jobs in DE freeking troit, MOVE....go pick veggies or whatEVER....

I think voters should have some skin in the game....OWN a house mortgage is ok, but not renters.....OR have a ongoing business as defined by the IRS....5 years operation turning a profit......paying the owners.....

ALL else can NOT VOTE!!! period.....

that will do for now....
