Default New Springfield TRP 1911

For a while, I've been wanting a full size 1911 to go with my Kimber Compact which is a Commander length barrel on an Officer frame. The size is nice for carry but I've never been real accurate with it.

After a lot of research and shopping around, I decided on a Springfield TRP. The TRP is modeled after the FBI contract pistol Springfield's Custom Shop builds but is quite a bit cheaper. The fit and finish is amazing - much tighter than my Kimber. Match grade barrel (well, what gun doesn't claim that anymore?), extended mag well, front strap checkering, ambi safety, etc.

Put about 75 rounds through it last weekend with no hiccups and was I was far more accurate than with the Kimber. I'm sure the extra length and 3/4 of a pound helped.

The guy I picked this up from had swapped the stock grips for these from Larry Davidson and unfortunately sold the originals along with the stainless torx grip screws. They look a lot better in person than in the pic and feel great, but I'll probably get something more like the stock grips. Definitely want to replace the grip screws.

The only down side is it now costs about fifty cents every time I pull the trigger.

Finally got around to taking a picture tonight.

Does that gun like to run wet? That is, do you put grease on the slides and really lube it up? I know my Sig P938 likes it that way, as does my wife's M&P Shield even though it's not tight-fitting like the Sig.

I guess if the slide is really a tight fit about all you can do is put oil on it. I use Slide Glide Lite for grease, great stuff.

Congrats!

Very Nice... I agree on the fifty cents a trigger pull. The Rosa's crew needs to start a reloading club.

I would probably characterize this as "wet"... I tried a method I saw on Youtube and it seemed to work well. I used some Wilson's Ultima grease on the frame rails (not much) and just a couple drops of CLP on each side of the slide at the very back, then stood it on end and let the CLP run down the channels while I cleaned up the other parts. Also used grease on the lock up lugs on the barrel and slide but oil on the rest of the barrel and bushing. Seemed to work well.

I know what you mean about the 50 cents per trigger pull. I cringed at the range the other day when we shot up a bunch of 9mm ammo. I have no 124 grain FMJ ammo left, and don't have any idea when I can get more. The P938 really doesn't deal all that well with cheap 115 grain FMJ practice ammo. Had two FTE's at the range in only about 50 rounds. It fires self defense ammo (124 or 147 grain) all day long though, but that's more like $1 per round...

That's the truth! Actually most of my .45 supply I got at about .39 cents, but the best price I see today for PMC is .59.

I currently only have one gun in .45 (Glock 21) and actually have a pretty good supply of .45 ammo, about 500 rounds that I got "cheap" before Sandy Hook.

Funny that you mention 9mm -- that's what got me started looking. I was going to pick up a Springfield Loaded in 9mm so I could afford to shoot more. No luck finding a Loaded in 9mm anywhere and while I was looking the 9mm ammo got almost impossible to find.

What's a guy to do... I just had to buy SOMETHING and the TRP started calling me.

9mm Handgun Ammo | 9mm Pistol Ammo | 9mm Pistol Ammunition At Sportsman's Guide

Don't know how accurate this ad is, but their "expected availability" for Winchester white box 124g and 147g in 9mm is 3/25. $17.59 non-member price. $16.71 member price.

Nice gun. I looked at the TRP, but ultimately went with the Dan Wesson Valor.

The Valor was on my short list too. I'd heard great comments about it but hadn't had a chance to look at one.

Saw a TRP Operator with a rail at a local shop and loved it - except for the rail, and the price, which was full SA retail. Just a couple days after I saw it, this one came up on a regional for sale list and I snapped it up.

Have you been happy with the Valor?

Absolutely love the Valor...I do not regret throwing down the cash for it at all.

You made a good choice. I'm a fan of the TRP Operator.

That's a beauty! I was close to ordering a stainless TRP off Guns America but found this one.

Those are the grips I want! Like the adjustable sites too.

That isn't a Springfield mag is it? I've used Wilson's in my Kimber but have heard the TRP likes other brands better.

What defensive ammo has worked will in your Operator TRP?

Nice. A friend of mine picked up a Springfield 1911 Range Officer back in January. Shot it a few weeks ago. Heavier than I'm used to with my polymer guns, but so nice to shoot.

Someday I'll end up picking up a 1911 of my own.

I love the Valor for its simplistic features. No front cocking serrations was a big plus for me...I'm just not a fan of those. I almost went for the black version but this one was in stock and a good price.

Congrats on the TRP. I've got a Pro on order through the Springfield Custom Shop (probably 18 months out) and a set of Davidson grips on the way for it. I've had 4-5 sets of grips from him. Larry makes good stuff.
