The Eternal Flame Waterfall in Orchard Park, New York, on January 10th, 2023.

This is a 35-foot waterfall with a grotto that contains a small flickering flame about 8 inches tall. Scientists from the University of Indiana led by Professor Arndt Schimmelmann state that shale under the waterfall isn't hot or old enough to cause the formation of gas pockets. Schimmelmann says, “This flame and these seepages have occurred for millions of years in those areas, and we know that the source rock, about 400 meters deep, is not very warm. It should not even be able to produce much gas at this temperature, yet the gas is coming, and it’s not being depleted. So, our hypothesis is that a different mechanism is responsible for continuous gas generation at depth.” Basically, something else is keeping the 'eternal flame' burning, and to this day, researchers are unsure exactly what that may be.

Saw the flame in 2019. It's in an isolated part of the 2300 acres park. In a deep gorge. Took a bic lighter and rubber bands( to fasten the bic to a large stick) since on occasion the flame goes out but didn't need them. Since that time the park improved the trail getting to the flame.

Natural gas is everywhere in ancient formations and deep deposits. If not harvested it leaks out, which is why advocating for not using it is so dumb...
