looks like that purple heart piece expanded and then contracted, separating the other joint.

It was a little wet. I rinsed it off and that's when I found the crack.

What can be done?

dry it off. inject some glue in the joint and clamp it overnight.

store it on edge going forward, lets both side dry at the same rate.

apply another coat of finish (beeswax/mineral oil mix).

before you inject some glue, make sure the joint will draw tight with a clamp.

Stop whacking your wood and it won't crack.

for my wood cutting boards, i observe the following rules:

never submerge in water

if i clean with running water on one side, i dry it off immediately.

when it no longer beads water, it's time for a fresh coat of finish.

i store them on edge, with room for air on both sides, so they dry evenly.

i never cut meat on them, raw or cooked. veggies and bread and crackers - yes.

if they get too scratched up, sand with 220 grit sandpaper, and then apply another coat of finish.

i have one i made in HS (edge grain maple), that is still in good shape. that would be about 1981 or so.
