Default So..... You Wanna Know What Med School Costs?

Eryn got her financial aid package today.

It basically boils down to this:

Tuition $55,736
Scholarship - $26,806.00

Therefore, it will cost her $28,930.00 for tuition, per year, not to include books or living expenses.

The entire package consists of $79,806.00 in scholarship and loans.

Therefore, $79,806 - $55,736 = $23,736 to live on in DC...
If you figure $1500/ mo rent, she'll have $400/month to live on
She lived on less than that in Africa

Personally, I think that she hit the jackpot.

With undergrad and medical student loans, all told, she'll owe ~$244k

Not a bad investment if you ask me.

btw... Thank you Will for your insight.

And she can continue to apply for more scholarships while in school. If she is employed at a hospital during the summers or even part time, check and see if they offer scholarships for employees. The volunteer group I belong to has a scholarship program for employees advancing their education in the medical field. Over the years, we have even helped cafeteria workers become RNs. The scholarships are small, but we are a small hospital and every little bit helps.

Hint: They usually like the idea that you intend to continue a working relationship with that hospital after graduation, though they may not absolutely require it to receive the money.

Best of luck to your daughter.

Hopefully she can find something else for less than that $1500 a month for rent to make that $400 go a bit farther..

I know you're proud Jeff.. don't blame you as I would be also.

IF that is her in your avatar there, I would be too......

but sears, good on HER, hope she stays in the states, maybe get a gig at NIH right next door to her med school.....Bethesda Md, is just up the road a tad...maybe 6 miles or so do THAT on the Metro, don't even need a CAR.....

for that matter, you could try HUGHES Medical Institute.....Howard Hughes Medical trust 3.5 billion bux some 30 years ago, they built a campus next door to NIH.....maybe they could have something for her....they finance R&D in close cooperation with NIH so to get max bang for the bux.....

These daze NIH is like the White House for getting in/out of the joint....due to the nuclear reactor on campus, and it is very much a college campus type atmosphere......an old contractor friend shut down his business, and took on a job for Hughes Med.....head of physical plant/construction of the campus.....

Is she trying to live in georgetown? My friend's parents have a rental down there. I helped him show it once. Was in a nice area. We walked to a bunch of shops.

$1500 is with one room mate living with her. The more room mates, the more money she has.

No, she's looking in Foggy Bottom.
How much were they asking?

Mine was under $20k, barely. A med degree is good if you specialize in something like radiology, cardiology, pediatrician, etc. GP's, not so much.

And everyone knows what they call the guy who was dead last in his med school class! That's right, doctor!

In-state med school in Texas is DIRT cheap. When my Dr daughter went to UT San Antonio, the cost was 9k/year including the books (11 years ago). Thomas Jefferson in Philly was 44k at that time, not including books. UT Houston is now only $16,300/yr for tuition and books.

My total cost for her education was about $250k all from the bank of dad.
Undergraduate at Univ of Pennsylvania (no scholarship)
Med school at UTSA - tuition and living expenses
Residency at Barnes Jewish in St. Louis (5 years)
Fellowship in Tampa (1 year)

I'm happy that I paid because if I had kept the money, R Allen Stanford would have gotten it.

That's 14 years of education after high school before you even begin earning anything significant.

It's nice she has no debt. I'm waiting for a new Z06 with the Z07 package to show up (like THAT will ever happen).

Congrats to your daughter ( OK and the proud parents too )

My co worker's son just got matched for his 3 year residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Phila Pa ( his no 1 pick and he got emergency medicine--all hands on as the ER is the classroom )

Dr Dan has $120K in student loans and mom & dad forked out about $200K
