I can't tell you the number of simple words I seem to have to look up every time I form a thought. Maybe that's a clue my thoughts really aren't worth airing in public.

Deep in my past I was a good speller, I have noticed as I have gotten older my spelling skills are rapidly departing me. As you said thank God for spell check, one of the reasons I use the Opera web browser is the excellent auto spell check configured in the browser.

You sound like me, Unk, except my loss is handwriting. When I was a kid, I was the one that wrote the posters (back before automatic whatever). Now you can't read a word I write. Even I can't read it the next day.

I used to be a very good speller in grade, and high school. Then I went to college to become an engineer.

I don't know what it is that they do to you in learning the art of engineering. But one thing I do know, is it ruins your spelling forever. I have never met an engineer who could spell for shit.

That's what happened to me... the deeper I plunged myself into Geekhood the worse my spelling got. Like my broham lspencer534 my hand writing plunged into the pits during my college edumcation.

My dad was born in '05 and mom in 03....each of them had perfect penmanship till the day they died....even dad with strokes starting age 74 or so, and him dropping the golf hobby, then at a gradual rate mom would make out the checks and give to him to sign....the last one was about a week before he passed on....same signature as was on checks from the freeking 50's yet....

I had to sort through a toss a whole office of every piece of envelope and paper checks that they had, from the 20's on as a married couple....
an amazing amount....it was winter '91-92 and the wind at the dump was horrendous....3/4 ton Dodge work VAN, open the doors on the TWO loads, packed TIGHT and the winter wind grabbed those checks and envelopes sending them to the winds....the dump folks were not pleased....

my handwriting is not worth crap and never was, if anything it's worse over the years....arthritis...

Mine is not because of arthritis. (I do feel for you though brother) But rather from having to not write anything down any more. Everything these days is typed into something.
