Default Computer Geniuses, Step Inside: Need Laptop Recommendation

My 4+year old HP i-7 laptop is getting a little long in the tooth, and has some old age problems that make it usable, but annoying, and the computer repair guy I showed it to recommended, either live with the annoyances or get a new one.

So, I'm thinking about this:

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-Premium-BrightView-LED-Backlit/dp/B01AD7YD9S/ref=sr_1_20?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1456585229&sr=1-20&keywords=laptop&refinements=p_n_feature_eighteen_browse-bin%3A6819965011%2Cp_n_size_browse-bin%3A7817234011%2Cp_89%3AHP
That's about the limit of what I want to spend. I don't do anything really intensive, just normal surfing, QuickBooks, word processing, etc. Is this a fair deal? Should I be looking at something else instead? Better price on this somewhere else?

I'd like to stay with HP, to help them recover from the damage Carly did to them.

Edit: all the computers I am looking at seem to have a new wireless adapter designation. Will this work with my current router?

I bought a MS Surface Pro 4. It is really, really nice. You can get an i7 processor if you need the horsepower. It is a little pricey, though.

I'd like to be under $ 700, better still at under $ 600, for something that probably won't last 5 years, if the current HP is any indicator.

Yes, it'll be fine, WiFi standards are generally backwards-compatible.
New router with old devices would be more of a concern, but routers typically have legacy broadcast modes, so that usually isn't a problem either.

I don't have a specific laptop suggestion, but I''d look at Asus before HP or Dell.

I've had really good luck with ASUS home computers, have a laptop and a desktop from them...most of my network equipment is Asus as well.

Dell has been a great work computer, my last 3 or 4 work computers have been Dell's, I did break a motherboard in one, but Dell did eventually replace it, under warranty.

My last laptop was an ASUS and it's fine. HP was OK about 5 years ago, but not now. Windows 10. This model looks like a nice one.

The problem with a HP or Dell, is they come with preloaded crapware that you will probably never use. Not only that, it slows down your pc in the process.

An Asus or Acer are also good choices, and probably cheaper. The link that CyberCowboy posted is a good one.

ASUS has 17" versions but they are probably going to be closer to $1000. Most 17" laptops are considered to be "gaming laptops" and have better graphics and resolutions. They are fine for everyday use though.

ASUS would be my first pick for a commodity laptop. My next laptop will be Alienware, to the tune of about $3,600. They offer the screen resolution, memory, and storage that I need.
