REAL IDs or Star IDs are not mandatory for Alabama residents. However, by October 1, 2021, all US citizens will need a passport or REAL ID to:

Board a plane (even domestic flights).
Enter federal facilities.
Enter nuclear power plants.
Getting a REAL ID for the first time in Alabama requires a trip to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) licensing office. Once you have a REAL ID you can renew the same way you’d normally renew a license or ID.

I don’t think I’ll have to enter a nuclear power plant. But you never know.
It’s time to renew my license so I think I’ll go ahead and get the Star Id. The Alea office is about 4 miles away. I have all the required documents.

I renewed my license a few yrs., ago. The same birth certificate that I have used all my life was no longer good enough for them....? I wound up having to go the courthouse and paying $30 or something dollars for another one that was certified or some crap. I was ticked off! They didn't care. Bring us another one if you want a license. My license has the little star now for whatever reason.

And the same people who make these laws find it totally fascist to expect their voters to be required to show a picture iD.

My birth certificate is old too. I wanted to go ahead and get the id just in case I had to fly or go in the federal building. Sons work out of town a lot and I worry if they get hurt or sick how long it would take to drive.

Early 80s when my kids were new, I had to get a TS clearance because I worked for a walk through metal detector company, went to countless high security places from white house on down the list, nukey plants included, prisons too.....flipped all over the nation,
