Automatically turning off TC/AH at startup without pushing the button.
I've been interested in doing this for some time, and now seeing this very same question asked at the "other" forum, I began to search for the product I needed to pull it off.
If you saw that thread at CF C5 Tech, you'll note the answers range from "impossible", to "buy this $150 device". Tuning the Traction Control PCM timing retard out is an easy possibility (for me at least - I have EFI Live), but that does nothing to affect rear brake application, which is the other part of TC most don't realize. I'd rather not smoke through rear brake pads. Also does nothing to kill Active Handling, which yes I want OFF as well. (OMGosh!) I always knew how to make this happen, I just never found the "cheap" 12vdc device that would do it exactly as I envisioned...Until now. I found it, for $14, and ordered one to experiment with. Very small circuit board device, only 2.5x3", easily hidden in the dash or console. It's basically a multifunction on or off delay 12vdc timing relay with an added one-shot feature after timeout, that I will tie in to the starter circuit. It will work like this: Turn key to start, the purple solenoid wire that energizes the starter solenoid receives 12v. (wire is easily tapped into in the pass footwell). This will be what triggers the timer relay. After engine starts and key is let off, purple wire goes dead, as does the relay trigger, which then starts timing out (off delay), I figure ~2 sec timeout, then the relay will activate a 1 sec (one shot) closure of the normally open relay contacts, each tapped into the (normally open) wires of the stock console pushbutton. This will exactly simulate pushing the console button a couple seconds after each engine start. By not disconnecting/disturbing the TC button itself, it will remain 100% functional, and all systems can be manually restored anytime after startup if desired by using the button. This will only simulate a 1 second button push a couple seconds after each time the car is started, which will shut off TC and AH automatically. Yes, DIC message will still have to be reset, but I also see the possibility in conquering that hands-free too. So there, "the impossible", soon to be solved for $14, and a few simple wire splices. Certainly not a mod for everyone, because as most will tell you, those "safety features" are the only thing keeping your car from spinning wildly out of control, but for anyone else interested, there is a way. |

Sell 'em Tom. Complaints about this are why they changed the setup in the C6. If I remember correctly it's 1 tap for Comp Mode, then hold down for all-off. Yeah it's not the same as what you're saying, but I remember people wanted it into comp mode easier.

I never really thought about this with intent to market a product, just something I always wanted for my car, since all I ever do is shut it all off at startup anyways. I understand the vast majority out there would prefer to keep Active Handling on (comp mode), so there would probably be more interest in that. |

The way the past few weeks at work have treated me (insanely busy), I take every opportunity to GTFO as soon as I can each day...And unfortunately, that's where the car currently resides, so messing with the car after work isn't so appealing because I'm still essentially there at work.
Well that and I don't have the relay yet. I should be able to make it functional w/o pulling the console, so it won't take me but a half-hour to get it working when I do receive it. |

Nice work!
I was doing some logging a few weeks ago. My TC starts pulling timing below 3k RPM. It's amazing how much stronger it is with the traction control off. |

Are you saying it starts pulling timing before you are even spinning? Sort of a preemptive traction control? And if so, does the message come up on the dic right away or is there a threshold of sorts before notification that the system is active?

sounds a lot like my original "Auto-Comp". I too used the starter signal to start the timer for the button push.
I also added a second timer... called the "Valet Mode" that would not auto-select the Competitive driving mode unless you waited until the dash guages finished their initial power-on sweep. Anyone not knowing to wait this 6-7 seconds woulds still start up just fine... but would not auto-inact the Comp mode. The Valet Mode was an optional jumper-selected feature. As many of you know, The Auto-Comp never made it into final production. I was offered a buy-out by the guy that mfgrd the Trans-Active Controller module (the $150 module you all hear about)... and now they are out of business. |
