Default Annie

I met her in the second grade and she was the most beautiful girl that I had ever seen, never mind been a classmate of. I had a mild crush on her, still, in high school, but she was in the popular clique while I was sort of a loner. She was upper class, the Volvo set, and I was definitely not.

It wasn't until I had gone through two years of college, then quit to work full time so that I could pay for more, that I built up the confidence to ask her out. She said yes immediately.

I picked her up in my old car and took her out to a trendy casual restaurant. And we talked. A friendly conversation, what our goals where, what is your dream job, where is your dream home, that sort of thing. After growing up with this girl, living in the same town for 12 years, we had nothing in common. Zero. She didn't even like my car.

We're "friends" on FB, which I rarely frequent. Still a good looking woman. A bit on the skinny side though.

I learned yesterday that a high school crush died 2 years ago of a heart attack. Closest I got to her was a drunken kiss. She looked like Traci Lords but with dark hair.

Yaddie calling someone else skinny. That's great. Classic Yadkin.

I tripped over an old name on my HS reunion site, somehow someONE in the klass managed to find my email/from/through/on Fakebook, and so I get emails about class reunion....klass of 1962 been a while......

and on that list was one of the chicks I had a total crush on, turns out she married/divorced TWICE and so lives in an apt not so very far from the old HS.....witch is getting ready to hold a 60th reunion but I not bothering to attend on account of I don't recognize ANY of the names or faces on the site they set up, except for that one chick.....so hell with it, we traded emails a couple times, she may not go either, she went to the 50th and found it not particularly fun.....not BAD, just no big deal.....at age 78.....

Like a gentleman I brought her home and kissed her before I said goodbye. Again, nothing there....

I had a friend in elementary school who's father was an electronics wiz, and tricked up his old Volvo as a rally car. All sorts of timers and stuff screwed onto the dash. It was cool as hell. When my friend was in HS he saved up and bought a well-used P1800. Today those are going for $50k.

Another HS friend had an old Volvo wagon. When he wasn't on his Harley. Those things were like little tanks back in the day.

Annie's dad was a high-priced lawyer. Nice guy, but not at all a car guy. New Volvo every three years. So Annie considered herself "upper middle class" and destined to stay that way. Now she's an elementary school teacher, divorced (only once I think), living in an apartment in New Hampshire, where most of my classmates were forced to move to because of the cost of living in metro Boston.

I knew a lot of cute girls in HS, and some of them actually liked me. But I only dated two because of my strict standard. I was a weird kid and insisted on a girl being smart. Gosh I was dumb.

I was pretty easy, and sleazy, in high school, my standards increased when I went wife searching.

Jewish, vegetarian, kept her married name but changed her first name. (I still think of her with her lovely given name.) We've never discussed politics, but I kinda doubt she's a Trump voter.

In HS I was the grounded, nice guy, to my detriment I suppose. My first GF dumped me ('you're so nice, but I have to see what else is out there'). So I found one younger and prettier. Then #1 begged to take me back.

#2, exact same story. She practically threw herself at me after I had been with Baby Doll for a year. I didn't have the heart to tell her how far down the ladder she had fallen.

Friends had a 544 with the dual carbs. Cool little tank of a car. Looked like a pre-war Ford. Other friends had the P-1800 in a wagon with the glass tailgate. Way cool. And my best friend and his family went to Sweden in '72 and brought back a brand new wagon with a 4 speed stick. They had that until 1981, when he rolled it off a 15 foot culvert and landed on it's lid. Nobody got hurt. That car was slow, but when up to speed in the hills, handled well and had waaaaay better brakes than anything at the time.
As for the 'Volvo' crowd, if they were new Volvos (back in the '80's) you could base a whole stereotype around them. Either cost or in between. Your assessment matches mine out here. These are not my people.

"What'll you have, Sir?"
"Uh....how are the all night drinking?"
"Very good Sir. We just got them in today."
"Sounds good. I'll take a few of those. Thanks!"
