My friends and I did Estes rockets when we were kids. Out of the dozen or so launches that I did, I only got one back. The rest were taken by the wind and ended up in trees.
The most awesome flight was a friend of mine who forgot to glue the cardboard ring into the top of the engine tube. When it lit off, the engine drove up inside the rocket, it went up about 15 feet then just hung there on fire. |

The days when 10-12 year olds were allowed to play with rockets, nitro engines, cherry bombs, M-80's....without getting hurt or arrested. Sigh....

I did the estes stuff as a kid too. I remembered to use streamers instead of chutes because the wind where I lived was pretty strong. I remember my favorite launch was at dusk (fluorescent green paint job and streamer). Large but light rocket (C-67 motor). Saw the rocket engine until the flame went out, heard the nose pop and could actually hear the rocket coming down. I could just barely see it. I was chasing after it trying to catch it (because that was my thing okay, don't judge) and the damn thing hit me right on the nugget. It was undamaged. What a great night.
As a celebration launch, I hard mounted a C-67 into a tiny TINY rocket and glued the nose cone in place and launched it without wadding. I NEVER saw that rocket again. My dad told me once he saw a small rocket on the side of the road on his way to work about 12 miles away...I think he was trolling me. LOL. I could never get enough of those rockets. |
