Reading the leftist version of what happened, I have to question, who called the police. Can we all just agree that calling the police is tantamount to "everything looks like a nail when you're a hammer?" This guy was in his own apartment, presumably tearing the place up. It seems like he didn't break water pipes until the police had already shown up.

So who called, and what did they reasonably EXPECT would happen? Police would enter and stop this guy from tearing up his own apartment? Was any other person actually in danger? I mean, theoretically, he could have set the apartment on fire, which would have endangered others, and after the police arrived, he did apparently flood his apartment. Did he have the presence of mind to do that to prevent the use of tazers?

I don't know what the solution is here. Maybe when it became clear initially that the guy wasn't going to give up and allow himself to be carted off to jail or a locked ward hospital, the police should have just left? "Hey, look, we don't want to make you any more upset, so we're leaving now, OK?" Deescalate things. Trashing your own apartment seems like at worst, a civil tort between the tenant and the landlord, not a criminal matter.

That's because they haven't cut you from the herd, singled you out as prey. Cops have a different mindset when they do that. They've singled you out. They're nervous, and if there is more than one, they're more like pack animals on the hunt, waiting for you to make a wrong move, to slip up. At the end of the day, job one, the mission, is for them to go home safe, and you are a threat to that, and they're going to treat you as such. You may have had encounters with cops pulling you over for speeding that you were able to calm down by being both rational and submissive. That's different than the police were called ON you. Say I call and report you are tearing up your apartment and I want the police to stop you. You're going to get a whole different response, especially if you don't present as rational and submissive.

And if you can't or won't deescalate things, don't expect the cops to do it. In this case, it's a big dude who objectively is a few French fries short of a Happy Meal. That actually IS objectively a dangerous situation they've injected themselves into, especially after they went inside and there's no longer a door separating the cops from the guy having the breakdown.

I really don't know what the solution is, other than maybe bringing in a marksman with a tranquilizer gun to dart the guy with something that will knock him out quickly. Even then, if the guy's on drugs, how will the tranquilizer mix with that. People die from getting tased, too.

The whole thing just seems fraught with peril for everyone involved.

Edit: The key facts here are, apparent mental illness and, dude is inside his own apartment, spazzing out.

They very well may have had to shoot him, it could have been a case of suicide by cop. We've seen plenty of videos like that. Guy runs full tilt towards someone while brandishing a knife......not a lot of options there. Will need to see the videos, though.

In my mid 20's (~2011) I worked at a night club in S. Florida. As I left work, several squad cars surrounded me and one officer had a gun pointed at me.

I was HIGHLY confused by the situation but listened to what the officers told me to do & obeyed their instructions.
I consented to them searching my pockets as well as my car.

After an hour or two of fun, the police learned that they apprehended the wrong Kevin.

There was a drug dealer that frequented the club (older brother of a coworker) and he & I have the same first & last names. We also drove identical black Mercedes coupes.

Once everything was cleared-up, they apologized, we shook hands and that was that.
If I was combative, things would have escalated in a completely different manner.
