Default I, too, need a doctor...

Last Friday I took my new Ruger .357 Magnum to a gun range. I had fired about 20 rounds when my ear protectors failed. Dayum, the pistol is loud! It's like I was put in a 55 gal. drum so that everything sound is unpleasant. No ringing in my ears though.

I have an appointment wth an Audiologyst next Tues. Do you think it's something they can fix?

You'll have to get a listening ear dog.

When I was young and foolish, I discharged a .45 with no hearing protection. Normal hearing returned after a few days.

I was wearing these:

RangeMaxx Electronic Earmuffs | Bass Pro Shops: The Best Hunting, Fishing, Camping & Outdoor Gear

After the protectors failed I went to my workshop and put in a pair of sponge protectors in my ears. I fired one more round and found out the sponge was useless. I therefore was exposed to 2 rounds.

When I was in the Army in the '60s I had the opportunity to shoot a Luger at the range once. Of course we knew nothing about ear protection back then. From that day to now, over 50 years ago I've had a loud ringing in my ears. Hope you don't have the same symptoms...

Tinnitis is no joke. I've had high pitched industrial sounding noise in my head for 30+ years. Uou sound like you may have perforated an eardrum.

I have been using Howard Leight MAX earplugs both at work and when shooting.
Highest NRR Earplugs for Noise Reduction | Howard Leight

They have NRR of 33

When I'm scoring at High Power rifle matches, I'll wear my earmuffs too.

I generally wear double hearing protection when I shoot indoors, a pair of these;
Surefire EP3 Sonic Defender Ear Plugs (NRR 24 dB)

and then muffs. I was on several ships that had high noise areas (double hearing protection) and got in the habit of doing that.

Haven't had any problems yet...

I hope this starts a good habit of ear safety for you!
Served on tanks late 60's, then civilian highpower matches with crappy
ear protection. Now all my high range hearing is gone and tinnitus drowns
almost everything else out! Of it all, I miss silence the most....

Went to a race at Atlanta a couple of years ago and for the first part, I had not ear protection. Couldn't hear good for weeks. Virtually nothing that night. You will be ok with that.

Having said that, I think we here all agree that you need to see a doctor and most of us agree on the kind of doctor.

The front stretch at atlanta is really bad. I have attended Nascar races most of my life and I have never heard anything like it is there. AT the front stretch, the stands are blocked in the back.
