My buddy Andy lived up the street from you guys at Contra Costa Place. His folks had a heirloom brass spittoon that was cast brass, not rolled or stamped. Must have weighed 25 pounds. It was from the 1840's. Well, all that was left of it was a brass puddle on the ground. It sucked going through that area a week or so afterwards. All you could see that was left standing were Weber BBQ's with no wheels and brick chimneys. Nothing else left. And with the houses and trees all gone, you realized how SMALL the neighborhood actually was. Who would have ever thought that a fire could jump the 24---all eight lanes plus a center median--at the Caldecott and keep going. Holy Crap that was a depressing time.

My friend's parents rebuilt, but it was never the same. Sheetrock and linoleum, not lath/plaster and hardwood. And no redwood trees, etc. They did buy the adjacent lot and built a spec house on it and made out fine.
I'd of done what your folks did---the area was never the same and a bad reminder of what once was. Who needs to see that every day? That, and a lot of the re-built houses did NOT fit the vibe of the area. Waaaaay too big for their lots, etc.
