Jeep should have brought back the J line. I used to drive one in the 70s on my furniture moving gig.

I'll add: I've worked on them too. And feel the same way. Brand new Jeeps with out of spec crankshafts that call for oversized bearings on some (but not all) journals. Bore diameters out of spec when new, so oversized pistons/ rings used. Cracked manifolds. Blown up coolant recovery tanks. ECU issues.
Thin weak axles that like to snap at the worst possible time. Automatic transmission failures. Poor overall fit and finish and quality of materials. Poor fuel economy. But still MILES ahead of Range Rover and Land Rover. That said, Jeeps that I deal with on the trail can really, really wheel. The 4 liter 6 is a great engine and has a ton of usable low end torque. Around here, for around $3500, you can buy a used 20 year old Cherokee and make it into a great off road platform. Jeepers are like Democrats or Oakland Raiders fans: No matter how shitty or if they lose, or break down, they are loyal to the core and will be until death. A lot of people like Jeeps and the versatility of the platform which makes for easy customization. Jeep is truly a 'fun' vehicle and that is the attraction. If I lived in the desert I'd have an old Willys flat fender for sure. Here's my POS 'tin can' that is now 40 years old and has never let me down. Ever. Still running the original drivetrain and paint. The first time it saw a garage for covered parking was December 2018. I love Zeek, but I'll bet my tin can will still be around when his new beauty has been recycled into a washing machine. The guy I bought my tin can from 30 years ago used the money on a down payment on a new '92 Ford Escort station wagon. I'm sure it's still on the road! LOL |
