Default Firearm owners...

How often do you clean your weapon? I keep my home protection weapon in a hard shell, egg crate foam filled box at all times. No dust or anything to really worry about. I clean it very well and oil it good after taking it to the range, and have not really done a periodic cleaning on it. I have never had a misfire or any other malfunction...just curious.

Just after I shoot them. I've never sat around and cleaned my guns for the helluva it.

Depends on the weapon. Glocks not so much. 1911s, I check the lubrication every few weeks whether they have been fired or not.

The only thing I do is every so often I swap my empty clip/mag/whatever you call it with the full one. I may just be paranoid, but I feel like the springs do have a life span...and I cnt compromise my safety due to a failure to feed.

The is just a smith and Wesson 9mm. Nothing special, but its some defense. The main thing is that I shoot pretty well with it, and I know my wife could grab it and defend herself. That's what I was looking for when I bought it.

I'll be looking to get something else pretty soon.

I've noticed my daily carry weapon dries out in about two weeks. So I just re-oil. My other guns seem to do just fine in the safe. Of course they get cleaned every time I shoot but they've gone months without oiling.

I clean any gun that is shot within a week or two of using them assuming they're not exposed to moisture.

Anything not shot regularly gets cleaned about once a year. These are greased rather than oiled and before shooting them I need to degrease and re-oil. Carry gun gets cleaned about every 6 months if not shot.

Hope that's closed cell foam. Anything that can absorb or hold moisture will promote rust. Open cell foam is nothing more than an artificial sponge.

I've got an ammo question. How long can ammo sit around in a dry cool environment? Thanks

I don't worry about it with centerfire metallic cartridges. Rimfire and shotgun shells are the only thing I've seen misfire due to age. I think because they're more prone to moisture penetration.

I've some concern regarding vibration over time though. A box of ammo sitting in a car for an extended period of time can alter the grain size of the powder. This affects burn rate and thus pressure... Dust doesn't have a "grain size" and is not classified as a flammable such as gunpowder is. Dust is an explosive hazard.

I store mine in the closed cell foam factory case .

I'm no expert but I do not believe a spring loses its "springiness" from being compressed for an extended period of time.

I'm sure someone here can confirm/deny.

Your magazines will wear out faster from loading/unloading, than one that is left loaded all the time or unloaded all the time. Metal fatigue comes from loading and unloading, not from a constant state of compression.

I'm fairly sure it doesn't either, but if that is all I have to do periodically to prevent a FTF or FTL, I'm good with that...
