Ultra-Orthodox Men Cause Flight Delay By Refusing To Sit By Women, Again

An international Delta Airlines flight was reportedly delayed for roughly half an hour when several ultra-Orthodox Jewish men refused to sit next to female passengers.

Israel Radio first reported that Delta Flight 468, bound for Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport from John F. Kennedy Airport, took off 30 minutes after its scheduled departure time due to commotion onboard. Several Haredi, or ultra-Orthodox men, refused to sit in their assigned seats, which placed them next to women. But other passengers also refused to swap seats with the men, causing the prolonged delay.

In Ultra-orthodox Judaism, physical contact between men and women is forbidden unless they are first-degree relatives or married to one another.

HuffPost reached out to Delta Airlines for comment but did not hear back.

A similar incident affected an El Al flight from New York to Tel Aviv in September when Haredi men began asking women seated next to them to move and even offered compensation for seat changes. Many called the flight an "11-hour long nightmare" and several women started a Change.org petition after the experience to pressure El Al to prevent future harassment of female passengers on its flights.

Most every religion has zealot assholes. I'd respect the uber faithful more if they were known for doing something worthwhile, like helping people, vs. acting like pompous jerks.

The custom is they are not allowed to have any physical contact, if they were acting like Muslims they would treat women like their slaves and have no problem with physical contact, especially with non-Muslim women.

I don't necessarily understand this custom, but I'm not orthodox, can't even shake hands with an ultra orthodox Rabbi, mostly just a polite nod.

Hence why I have no room in my life for organized religion. Books written by men with their own agendas taken as an unbreakable rule book by those that have too little intelligence to realize that so many of these religious commands were and are used to oppress others.

Now please do not get what I am saying wrong. I believe we all have the rights to believe and follow a deity's teachings but use your own common sense. Have your own personal relationship with your deity, don't let others dictate what you know as right and wrong.

I don't get why no one would swap to be polite. If he'd asked me to switch seats because some woman's tits were touching him, I'd have no problem accommodating.

If I was one of those women, I'd be torn between being highly offended, and thus NOT wanting to change seats just to piss them off, and wanting to change seats because I wouldn't want to sit next to an asshole for half a day.

The ultra orthodox folks should have bought extra tickets, to make sure their rows were "pure."
