Default Guitar / Amp Aficionados

So I basically sold and gave away everything I had except my acoustic electric guitar.
That being said, for investment and playing purposes, I'd like to buy an antique tube amp. I'm thinking about an old Fender.
Is there anything out there that is still reasonably priced ?
What do you suggest ?

It’s a can of worms and very easy to get ripped off. My original 64 Deluxe was $1800. I sold two amps to buy it. But I had a pro amp tech and vintage expert go over it to confirm it was original. I’ll post more later.

The holy grail is prior to 1965 Deluxe Reverb or Deluxe, Bassman, Vibrolux. They are expensive. My rectifier tube is about $450 for a NOS

Investment opportunities in amps is shit. Especially at your age. That is unless you're gonna live another 75 years.

I've got a Fender Acoustasonic. Great little amp with on-board effects and a mic input. But it's investment potential is non-existent.

I have an old Marshall MG50 dfx you can have for $150. In excellent shape and just used for noodling around from time to time.

I bought it new about 5 years ago and it's probably got less than 2 hrs use on it.
Just didn't get the time with kid #4 arriving just after and the brokerage blowing up.
Happy to see it go to a home where it'll be loved.

Like everything else, in turn the old hobby stuff eventually looses it's value....

Like Lionel toy trains....really popular 25 years ago....today worth maybe 10% of the prices WE paid.....I was a member of Train Collectors Assn......and once every 3 months a local group met up at alternate member's homes.....went on like that until I moved south, having sold off my collection and broke even on it.....however that amp for ~150 bux.....you don't need a gun.....

Fender tweed amps from the ‘50’s are rich with tone (and cost).
Late ‘60’s early ‘70’s Marshalls are great. As far as an investment, the market fluctuations make it a crap shoot as to turning a profit or loosing your shirt.
Just find something you like, sound wise, and enjoy.

Scott, I think that I'm going to pass and continue to look for a tube amp.
I had a Line 6 modeling amp and let that go a while back. A tube amp has always been on my bucket list and with my major downsizing, I just don't have room for tons of toys anymore. Thanks for lookin out ! but I'm continuing to search.

Indeed. I see equipment with a different lens. I'm not a collector. If I'm just playing at home, I'll use my 95 Blues Junior - all tube. Sounds pretty good.

I choose gear that makes me money like a tool. I like the right tools for the job.

I'm using it here at a rehearsal

But my commercial rig for gigs and recordings is the 64 Deluxe or a 59-63 Deluxe Reverb.

My buddy plays with Bonnie Raait and he has a 56 Bassman. It is ****ing hammered but sounds incredible. He also has a late 50's Ampeg that sounds like Albert Collins.

Pre-CBS Fender amps are The Shit in the industry for good reason. They sound better, are more responsive and built like tanks.

Fender changed the circuitry starting in 65, using cheaper components. The earlier amps use point to point wiring instead of circuit boards. The inconsistency of hand assembly makes each one slightly unique.

The Beatles had about 2 dozen 64 Deluxes (non reverb). They are the main amp on all of their 60's recordings. Coming in at 22 watts, they provide a beautifully articulate brown sound.

I was lucky to find one that was 100% original. It had never been disassembled and had the original tubes (they are also built like tanks). The only mod I've done is remove one of the tubes and install a grounded plug (this change is acceptable in collector circles and does not impact the value) This sends more voltage to the tremelo and somehow make the amp sound tighter.

Oddly, I paid $1600 for my Mesa Boogie Mark IV in 1996. I sold it in 2018 to buy the Deluxe for $1,500. Although that is a pretty high end amp and was made when they still hand assembled. It had point to point wiring too.

And it weighed 70 lbs. Screw that. (it sounded like having sex with angels.)

If you want a great sounding amp - consider the Fender reissue Deluxe Reverb - all the clubs and festivals have them for backline. EVERYBODY uses them because they are too lazy to haul their own amps.

Not me. My amp only weights about 23 pounds.

Go to vintageguitar.com and check out the list of upcoming guitar shows that may be within driving distance of you. You’ll see all kinds of vintage and new tube amps that you can try out.
Edit: I just remembered that Fender has come out with a new line of tube “modeling” amps that are suppose to be pretty authentic sounding. Also Fender has a Joe Bonamassa twin tweed signature amp that’s suppose to be as authentic to vintage tone as the real thing.

I found a 1963 Kay Widowmaker at an estate sale. Not a high dollar piece, but, growing up it and their guitars were always in the music store window display.

Great starter pieces for every kid. I'm sure there was a guitar to go with it that someone beat me to first.

I would sell it. But, shipping would probably be a deal killer due to weight.
