I have a question for you regarding the Vietnam draft dodgers. Where do you stand on that?

So here is my OPINION.

Draft dodgers. There are some that left the country or never reported and were fugitives. That is one category and they should be despised right along with the affluent argument. Only the poor people fight is wrong.

Other categories included physical and mental defects. Those are different and should be characterized as such and should have been put in stateside service to fulfill roles so the able bodied men could go forward and fight. However, it has always been a stance that all Service men should be ready to fight at all times and I agree with that.

Whatever mental or physical attribute disqualified them "is what it is". To armchair QB that shit 50 years later is wrong because none of us were there or were part of that decision.

As a former Drill Sergeant and someone who weeded out physically and mentally defective people I can say for a fact the smallest things can disqualify you. Wetting your bed can disqualify you. Shin splints can disqualify you. I removed plenty of privates due to these things in my 4 years in that position and then more when I was a First Sergeant in a "line company".

My stance on the military is very different from a lot of other people's.

1. No married Soldiers.
2. No females.
3. Small highly effective tool in a "break glass" state. If called upon it is a lethal force that is "on kill" from the moment they are activated. To include using small nuclear devices if necessary (Tora Bora is an example).

4. There should only be two Services. Army and Navy. Both can fly planes and move forces. Both should wear the same uniform. We are wrapped around history and tradition instead of saving money and being efficient.

The military industrial complex, which I am apart of, has made the military bloated and ineffective over the last 70 years. We are way too big and bureaucratic.

That is my military stance. Don't call me a DoD cutter of budget though because I think all Federal departments should be cut all together and some cut so bad just to do basic Federal functions.

Bigger government = smaller individual and that is wrong in this country and is leading us down a road of ruin. I feel for my grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Fair answer.

Another question.

Would you punch a ten year old boy for breaking a window in your house? Sleep with your buddies wife? How about abuse an animal, just for the fun of it?

I'm fairly confident you would answer no to all these examples and I'll hazard a guess why; They're all reprehensible acts that go against the core of who you are.

Now extend that logic to *some* of the draft dodgers. Isn't it within the realm of possibility being sent to Vietnam was akin to punching a ten year old for breaking your window or abusing a animal for kicks? In other words your government is involved in an amoral war and it clashes with *everything* you believe in at your core? Would you screw your buddies wife because your government said it was OK?

The draft was enacted in December of 1969 - over a year after the Ten Offensive which largely turned this country against our involvement in Vietnam.

Full disclosure; I never served. I don't feel the least bit bad for that. You chose the military, I chose a welding hood. My expectation is you afford me the same respect you would give any other man. Military or not. (Not implying you are)

I was too young for Vietnam. (Born in 1962) But had I have been of age I'd have gone. There is no question in my mind. But I understand those that chose not to also.

Fair answer.

The 60's were another time of country development. There were two sides for sure. Drafts are a necessary evil for the nation's defense but should not have imposed it for the defense of Viet Nam.

Again a different time and I did not live in it.

The military paid the price in the 70s with shit leadership because of the draft and the military will not live that again. Lessons were learned and it is taught in NCO schooling how bad things were.

My perspective on your last couple of expressions.

People choose different careers. It's called freedom.

However, some of those careers offer differing opportunities and perspectives. Traveling the world into the differing shitholes all around this planet gives you a unique perspective on what happens when a government or a dictator (Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, hell most of the M.E. or Africa) rules over a people with an iron fist. Also when mob rule happens (Bosnia)

You don't get that by going on vacation at a resort in some foreign country.

I am not saying I am right. However, if you haven't seen those things, been spit on by a 6 year old Serbian girl, lost good friends in a fire fight, or pulled charred bodies out of a vehicle because they hit an IED and burned over 12 hours. Some might want to listen because events like that change people and shape the world one piece at a time.

I'll give you the respect like I am now but some lost it and will never get it back.

Why? Because man is cold and evil.
