Retirements are also going away. The blended retirement is in effect now. Not so cut and dry like it was when I came in. (1991)

I'm in no position to challenge this but I'll add another perspective. My father was in the Army in the 50's and was all but packed for Korea when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. He finished out his hitch and found work as a Cement Finisher.

I'm not entirely sure how this all works but he was a Type 1 diabetic which he developed during his time in the Army. As such, the only place he went for health care was the VA. After his retirement from working cement he volunteered at the VA for 20 years. I never heard him utter a bad word about the care he received there.

Such a bullshit response.

Dude, you have no clue how much I make, and it's substantial. Every time some libtard wants to tap into my wallet, it hurts. My 2018 and 2019 taxes paid to the federal government are quite near the average US household income each year. Forgive me for being salty. I'm not rich, and I'm not in the top 12 richest who now own collectively more than 1 Trillion Dollars. I've had shit years, I've had good years. FAFSA basically deemed me a millionaire, thus we got dick as GWiz went through 4.5 years at GT (Screw GWiz and all of her intellectual prowesss, she should get nothing for finishing at the top of her class...poor people need Craig's money. Let's reward those who didn't apply themselves and penalize those who did). Screw you Craig, you pay full price. Sorry about the 4 years after the great recession where you made basically zero and incurred a ton of debt (that you fought to pay off back to zero). You pulled yourself up, now you make a lot of money, now you get to take care of every other slug on the planet who can't pull themselves up via their own bootstraps.

I have gone into massive debt 3 times since the recession due to lack of work. Each time I've pulled myself through. I'm tired of doing that. I shouldn't have to pay for other's misfortunes. My FAFSA numbers were based off of good years whilst I was making zero, but I still got to pay full retail for college. I'd like a period of time where I get to recover and thrive, and salt some money away after the BS I went through .

Great !
Doing that, the risks were known, so I find it difficult to extol someone for the career path that they chose. Another path could have been taken, like I chose.
That being said, i totally respect people that were in the shit.
My uncle's best friend had his head blown off right next to him in a fire fight in Nam.
He came home all fk' up, but he endured, stayed married, and retired from the Chevrolet Tonawanda motor plant with a good pension.. No fk'n way would I make a comment about killing anyone in front of Uncle Eddie. He was drafted and should get every benefit possible.
My sister, who was in in the Grenada thing, and my cousin who was a tank mechanic in Ft. Knox ? I'll joke with them all day long.

Everyone talks about cutting costs and eliminating government programs and spending, but when it comes to you, not you personally, you hear the loudest yells.
Every corporation has been either eliminating medical benes or requiring contribution. Why am I still paying taxes for federal employees, including the non draft military, for their lifetime medical benefits ???
That pisses me off, yes.
That was part of the contract when they signed up, so it is what it is, and there's that.
Federal workers, politicians, and the military, have an easy time of eschewing people who are among this mind set. Case in point, here in these threads. The entitled feelings and comments and of certain people is not too palatable due to the above.
Volunteer or draftee. Does not matter we all served our country period. "The veterans of our military services have put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. They have dedicated their lives to their country and deserve to be recognized for their commitment."
-Judd Gregg

Remember this. Because you fall under this same protection everyday of your life as well as your family. It is not to be taken lightly.

So one of the few “perks” to joining the military is healthcare. If you don’t serve the full 20 years, the only health care you get for free is related to your service connected disabilities. Granted there are a few stipulations but that is the very basic down and dirty of it. The service connected disability isn’t even paid by the military, it’s paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Wether you volunteered or were drafted, if you were in the shit and came out of it for the worse, I have zero problems with supplying those individuals with the proper care they need.

I would rather pay for a disabled Veteran to receive health care than for some lazy ass leech to receive food stamps, housing, and a free cell phone.

Interesting discussion. I support our military 100% so before you all launch your missiles in my direction know that.

Short of actually being in the military I’d venture to say I work with a higher number of Vets than most people in the private sector. The Nuclear Navy supplies the Commercial Nuclear Power industry with a LOT of bodies.

A more closed minded group I’ve never met. Find *any* fault or criticize the military in any way and you’re labeled anti-American. Remind you of anything going on currently? See any parallels?

how about looking at it like instead of close minded. No one has come up with anything that will move them from their opinion or choice? Glad you support the troops

That's not always the intent is it? To change someone's mind or position on something?

I'll give you an example. Personally I feel if you devote 20 years (Which is believe is what is required for a pension) of your life to this country you're entitled to health care benefits. I've no issue with this whatsoever.

But what if I didn't? What if I felt like this benefit -Tricare I believe- was excessive and as a non-military individual paying for you, your wife and 3 kids was excessive? You might as well erect a crucifix label me Vladimir Lenin incarnate among military personal.

My point is virtually any challenge or questioning attitude to the military way of life will be met with bitter criticism. It's simply not tolerated. Granted, this is just my personal observations but as I mentioned upthread I work with a fair amount of former military not to mention some of the responses in this thread and several others.

This conversation regarding lifetime health care actually took place between a Navy Chief (Ret) and a Mechanical Engineer outside my office some time ago. When I heard the conversation develop I knew it was going to turn into a shit show. Oddly enough this Engineer does support the military I believe. Yet she (Yes he's a she) feels that paying for your three kids is excessive.

Here's my first deployment, yes I volunteered and this happened in the straits of Mallaca in 1989. That hole is where I worked. I was a machinist, and if you Google more images you can see my lathe. I didn't have a choice, chit happened and we saved each other and put out fires.

Your boat collided with a merchant ship which resulted in the sacking of one of it's officers. Argue it all you want but in the civilian world this is akin to an industrial accident. One of which every industrial worker on the planet is at risk from. Your example of putting it on the line is no different than a refinery worker doing hot work in a running unit. Some put it on the line so you have fuel for your Corvette.

The second you place actual in the shit military service in the same category as civilian, you lose all perspective. Yes, those Captains were derelict. But, they were there on orders for a mission. The sailors hurt or killed in those incidents deserve the same respect as any that are hurt or killed in the line of duty.

Now, shore based dweebs that get hurt in car accidents on base, I agree 100%. NFW should they get the disability crutch like field service.

BTW-I left service at 13 years, so, you're not paying for my medical.

Ya, I know. They signed on for that and it was in their contract. An enticement, if you will. GREAT choice if that's what you're into.
The title of the thread and my view is pretty simple.
I like the idea of the medicare age dropping to 60. I'm basically retired and paying out of pocket $1k /mo. for medical coverage for my wife and me. Being 57, I have to wait a shit ton of time and spend a shit ton of money until I can get on medicare. That would help my financial situation.
It's just ironic to get jumped on by people who have lifetime medical, sans Craig of course.
I've worked since I was 13yrs old and I'm so done with it. I don't want to have to go back to work just to pay for medical benes at this point of my life.
Is that so bad ?
I can't touch my pension until I'm 62
I can't touch my 401k until I'm 59½
I do have a good nest egg to tide me over , plus
Medical is the fly in the ointment for us.
That's all. And it turned into a shit show.

edit: Just saw your previous post.
You mean that you can't go to the VA for free medical for life?
I was under the assumption that was the case for all military personnel.
