I did hear this morning that they have the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) from the ship. The VDR is the equivalent of the black box on an aircraft. It will have all of the GPS data, engine, rudder info as well as voice recordings from the pilothouse (and a bunch of other data). This will be very telling as to what happened and what the crew did.

A few data points, this was a single screw ship (one shaft and propeller). On Navy ships, the rudder would be offset to one side to compensate for the torque from the propeller while going in the ahead direction, however, when going astern (backwards) the propeller would cause the stern to pull to one side (in the case of the frigate I was on) to port (left).

My thoughts (based on what's in the video), the ship lost power for some reason (bad fuel, operator error, malfunction who knows), and the ship started to drift south of the channel (as shown in the video and track). They should have had an emergency generator come online within a few seconds of the loss of power and other critical gear should have been on UPS backup. The EDG (Emergency Diesel Generator) should provide power to critical equipment including steering. That may or may not have happened (again VDR data will tell). Once power was restored (when the lights came back on) they may have tried to slow the ship by backing down (basically going astern on the prop), this could have caused the stern to pull to port, turning the bow to starboard. If that is the case, they would have been better off keeping the power ahead, and using the rudder to steer clear.

Again, all supposition until they review the VDR data. What am I basing this on, 11 years in the Navy, 3 years driving a single screw ship, and 20 years design control systems for Navy ships......
From someone else with a hell of a lot of time driving ships (not many single screw), I'd say that is pretty f-ing spot on. Bolded was my first thought as well.

Side note for those who may be interested, that's (most likely) what f-ed the Titanic. People panic and slam the bitch full astern. The reality is that it's usually about the worst thing you can do. ...kind of similar to slamming the brakes on ice in a car.

There is zero equivalence factor between people who want to come here and suck a tit, and those that want to work their ass of for the dream. We need to start weeding this shit out at immigration.

Lars just doesn't "get it." Never has, doesn't now and never will! He is interested in three things, spreading bullshit, making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it.

Manual labor is a respectable portion of what keeps the so called infrastructure going along. On some freezing 15deg snow packed morning when you see a watermain break in the street, you won't find many white guys down in the hole repairing it so you can get a nice hot shower for your sorry ass before you go out in the world for the day and degrade and demean those you feel are less than yourself.

You are a real piece of work.

Yup. What people forget is that without forward thrust from the prop, the rudder is basically useless. I've got a little bit of seat time in running a single screw and there's basically no directional control in reverse. You have to get your momentum in the right direction when in forward gear, THEN grab reverse and hope you've got enough momentum to overcome wind and current, and overcome prop walk.

Black box stopped when power went out is pretty dumb but it'll still show what happened leading up to power loss unless cutting power to the black box was the first intentional step

A VERY GOOD HIGH-QUALITY UPS costs about $200 at Best Buy or Walmart, no valid excuse for the black box shortage.
I would be very surprised if the investigation states the black box did not have a UPS, I am with you, this may have been an intentional shutdown.

HMMM, it may start smelling like a dead fish before the investigation concludes.

It didn't stop. From one of many sources:
Quote:
The National Transportation Safety Board detailed during a Wednesday night news conference what is believed to have happened in the moments before a cargo ship crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending the bridge collapsing into the water.

The NTSB received six hours of voyage data recorder (VDR) data spanning from midnight to 6 a.m. on the day of the crash. The VDR shows a basic snapshot of what’s happening, including the ship’s speed, heading, RPMs and audio from the crew.

VDRs are required to record 30 days of history, according to the NTSB. Six hours of data were released to investigators immediately, and the rest of it will be obtained later.
The six hours of data includes the time of the accident. Just because something is on the internet doesn't mean it's true.

Thanks, I should have responded as you did, as I did see the NTSB conference last night, and the lady did state what you posted.
The problem I see here is that buttplugger will play a role, which means even though much factual data will be reviewed, there will be many lies to serve the white house narrative, which at this time I am not sure of, but think it will be angled toward blaming TRUMP in some way.
Once TRUMP is the reason, I fully expect a house committee, similar to JAN 6 clownshow, to recommend criminal charges to block or invalidate his NOV WIN.

My God you are the most ignorant fool on this forum. And everyone knows it.
I promise you that I have more experience with labor and the trades than you will ever have in two lifetimes.

It is typical of a leftist fool making the statement that you made about white guys.

And the only one who I degrade and demean is you because you are a 1st rate liberal POS and well deserving of total mockery.

This sums it up perfectly. My morally bankrupt, dis-barred lawyer family member who was a life- long socialist had the same skewed views. Thought that bricklayers and mechanics ought to work to age 75 to pay for illegals. Saw no difference between an elderly blue collar worker and an executive. Thought all were 'privileged' and 'lucky' to work their lives away to pay the bills of the irresponsible. Horseshit.

Timeline is pretty detailed from the NTSB

Quote:
On Wednesday, the National Transportation Safety Board released an initial timeline of events in the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was struck by a container ship and destroyed early Tuesday.

At 0124 hours, Dali was under way in the channel, making eight knots and steering 141 degrees. At about 0125, multiple alarms went off, and the VDR ceased recording the ship's electronic system data. Using backup power, the VDR kept recording bridge audio, and it captured the pilot's verbal rudder commands.

One minute later, at 0126, the VDR was able to resume recording the ship's electronic data. Shortly after - at 0126:39 - the pilot made a general VHF call for tug assistance. This was the first distress call from the vessel.

At about this time, a dispatcher at the pilot's association contacted the duty officer at the MDTA, the state authority that operates the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This gave the MDTA enough early warning to begin shutting down the bridge to traffic, an action that officials have credited with saving many lives.
Never stopped recording bridge voice, just lost electronic system data briefly.
RIF

It seems he was giving commands to the chief below for emergency rudder control as I alluded to on the first page.

Houston did that. They calculated the amount of land each property owner has that is covered with something impervious, a building, a concrete driveway or parking lot, etc., and taxed the property owners for that. Oh, and Houston's officially broke.

Until two years ago, it was illegal to collect rainwater in CO. The ruling was that the water is already owned by someone else as soon as it falls. I can now legally have two 55gal collectors max.

These are the things that make you hate .gov
