Well, today I lost an uncle
He was more than an uncle. My uncle, Dale Thurman, passed a little after ten this morning. He was thirteen years my senior and the closest thing I had to a big brother.
He was very intelligent and inventive, with a quick wit and a great sense of humor. His laugh was loud and often. He was the one who instilled a love of all things auto in me. Dale was the man who took me under his wing and taught me the correct methodology for working on cars. He showed me there was no great mystery to them, only a mechanical dependence on the systems to work together to make an engineering marvel. His driveway goes to the rear of his house. The back porch is some thirty odd feet off the ground making carrying groceries and such a real bear to get into the house. He devised an elevator from an electric motor, cable, and wood and steel tube framing to make this task much easier. He also built in a generator house on the porch in case of power failures after the blizzard we had here in '93. Step out the rear door, flip a breaker to come off the grid, and flip a switch to fire up the generator. Dale was also the one who taught me the wonders of the British invasion of the music industry in the 60's. Still have a great love for The Beatles. He also introduced me to Jethro Tull in the '70's. I was probably the only kid in the disco era that wore Tull t-shirts to junior high. Together we saw them in concert three times. Dale had a major stroke three months ago. This left him paralyzed on his left side and on a respirator. I really hated this for him. Knowing how active his mind was it had to be hell confined to a bed. I went to see him every couple of weeks, and even though he couldn't talk he was still in there. I told him on the first visit we were going to have to get that tube out of his throat so he could get around, and we were going to have to learn sign so we could communicate. He held up his right hand, and began faking signing. The last time I was there two weeks ago I asked if he had been working on his signing and he did the same thing, and finished it off by giving me the finger. I explained I already knew that one. I had planned to go Sunday to see him but my brother texted me and said Dale was back in the hospital. He had suffered another stroke Saturday, and it was one the docs said he could not recover from. His daughter told me that he was in and out, barely aware of his surroundings, and hospice was called in Monday night. Dale was a good guy. Never hurt anyone, didn't have a violent bone in his body. I respected him as an uncle, loved him as a brother, and cherished him as a friend. I will miss him the rest of my life. That damn laugh. |

Now that I think about it, I only have one uncle left. I haven't spoken to him for awhile. I should call him. Sorry to hear about your uncle.

I understand the loss. My uncle is close for me as well. Not sure my mother appreciates that but I enjoy the company. I have also learned a lot from him, welding, racing, mechanical. My uncle is always an example, good or bad. But one of my favorite relatives.
It is difficult as we get older, some of those around us pass. Cherish the memories and appreciate the time you were able to spend together. |
