Quick access pistol safe?
With the baby now mobile and able to open stuff, the bedroom pistol needs to be better secured. What do y’all have and recommend?
As much as I would consider a biometric safe, I expect this kid and his generation will gave no problems opening anything electronic..so I’m thinking a mechanical locking mechanism. |

My Dad always kept his under the mattress a good arm length or top shelf in the closet, under some clothing........he and I used to go shooting from BB guns on up through .22 LR......I had the rifle though, around age 12 or so....
for some strange reason, all through the break-in's his pistol was never found/stolen.....I gave it to my son.....just a .38 Special....nothing powerful.... |

Since you are most likely to need your weapon while not fully awake, or already under considerable stress you must add training to open the safe to your regimen. I'm thinking every night before you hit the sack for at least a month,,, no peeking now!...then once or twice a week from then on. That act MUST come naturally and without thought or you might as well go unarmed.

I can't remember the brand name nut there is a pistol safe you stick your fingers in to press a code in a specific pattern. It also uses finger length too. Nice for keep smaller kids hands from accessing it.

My kids are grown, but I have a lot of granchildren. In my bedroom we have a shotgun and her pistol. Both are out of reach unless one really tries for it. Because of that we keep that door shut and locked when the kids are here. Deadbolt slide type lock at the top of the door. They are taught early that room is off limits.
I almost always have my carry pistol with me wherever I am. Next to me on the end table right now. When they are here it goes on the mantle. Without something to climb on they can't reach it. If they are here and I have to leave the room I pick it up. Safety is always on just in case. Everything else is always locked in one of the safes. Early on (about eight) I took my kids and stepkids to shoot. I wanted to take the mystery and curiosity out of guns. At the time I always kept one in the nightstand. I am a lot more safety conscious now. Not really sure what to tell you. I understand the logic behind a small safe, but at the same type that slows accessibility in the event of an emergency. But the number one priority is safety so there has to be some kind of a trade off. |

A gun safe is the only safe place for a pistol if you have kids.
I personally, could jimmy a lock by the time I was 7 yrs old. I could figure out ways to climb into upper closets and upper kitchen cabinets by the time I was 4 yrs old. Luckily, all I got my hands on were matches and drugs. (Think apartment fire and stomach pumped). Kids will find a way to get their hands on anything that they want to. I would not even show your kid that you have a gun until old enough to go out and shoot with you and learn gun safety. JMHO. I always had a shotgun loaded and ready in my bedroom closet though. Top shelf where momma hides the cookies. The girls didn't know I had it until they were 8 yrs old. That's when I taught them how to use it and where it was. |

Before I retired, I worked in an Army organization headed up by a 2-star general officer. He kept a handgun on his desk in a small safe that popped open nearly immediately when he laid his hand on top of it. I don't know the brand, but it wouldn't open with anyone's hand but his (many of us tried).
We were talking one day while I was doing something on his computer (I was his I.T. support), and I asked him why he needed a personal weapon at his desk on a secure installation. He said it was to keep the I.T. staff in line. |
