Agreed, working for an academic medical center I interact with a lot of high up physicians and research staff and almost all go by their first names, the junior staff are more inclined to go by "Dr.". Years ago I worked in the pharma business and the phrase in research was there were more doctors (PhDs) around than non-doctors but you would never know it as they all were just normal people

It is, but the term also used in IT/PMP circles...however using it as a title after a name is completely lame.

Nail on the head here.

I think learning in any form is a good thing, but these are certifications, not degrees. Kinda like an extension course. They want me to go through yellow belt training here, but I'd never even consider putting it on as a title.

People who do that shit are, IMHO, desperate for recognition. If you're good at what you do, the recognition will come whether it says anything after your name or not.

If you ever watched The New Yankee Workshop, Norm Abram had the title of "Master Carpenter." As I understand it, there's really no such thing. You're a journeyman when you've learned your trade sufficiently. It was a title that was created by the series producer, Russell Morash.

Will that work?

I had read that story too.

A great American woodworker was Sam Maloof. He was asked about his preferred title. He said "Woodworker" was fine. It's an honest word. Not too pretentious. Works for me too.

Frankly, I don't see why Ph.D is any different than the others (or any degree for that matter). You went to school some more. Congrats. Good job. No, I don't care. No, you're not a doctor. Nor do I care if you are an actual doctor.

Good schools don't do that. It's a serious commitment and a real contribution to the field if you get your Ph.D in most science fields.

Don't conflate the touchy-feely arts Ph.Ds with hard science degrees, please.
So someone went to school a bit longer. BFD. lots of people are likewise committed to a lot of things without feeling it necessary to tack pointless letters onto the back of their name. Exactly what reaction am I supposed to have upon seeing such?

Knowledge is contextual.

It's only useful if it can solve the problem in front of you.

This.

Requirements for a PhD require addition of new knowledge to the field of study. It's not just sitting in classes. The dissertation and its oral defense is a way to ensure one is well versed in the field and subject. It's arduous and can take anywhere from 3 to 7 years to complete. The research is original, usually published in peer reviewed journals along the way.

As someone who was PhD track, but didn't make the cut, I have a lot of respect for science PhDs. But like anything I analyze what they say for its own value. If they are in their wheelhouse, they should be able to school me.

YMMV.

I am employed now due to a leap of faith by my former boss. I now have his position and have completely overcome the lack of focus that nearly tanked my career.

Long story short, 5 years ago I probably couldn't have passed my dissertation. Now? I probably could, but it's been forged through trials of fire that would make many quit. Getting your hard science Ph.D from a good institution is very hard...and anyone trivializing that fact should just stop. It's not something handed out. It's not something most can achieve. It's a decade long pursuit of the truth in a particular subject.
Yeh, my eyes got woke up pretty good when I got that engineering tech job with a company that was essentially going under.....due to being surrounded by incompetent people in the tech staff....amazingly, I managed to survive as a tech while about a dozen others were weeded out in the year or so after I was hired....for some odd reason, the owner of the company appreciated that I understood how/why the systems worked.....the list of changes/people fired and new hires covered the entire operation....supply/order edit dept, production manager, EE --long story there seems I knew more than the EE I was working for, engineering dept head, QC dept, Secretarial help, and of course Me in the 'field service' dept.....flipping all over the nation on installs/problems.....company owner had a PHD EE...he used the title catch him in a lab one time, he deserved it....and once the incompetent people with all the letters were cleaned out, and folks hired that actually KNEW something....the company took off like a rocket.....

One of the most impressive folks in the operation was retired Adm. Roy White, and we damn sure knew it too, he was known as the grim reaper, got called into his office, and it usually a death sentence.....his field was Chemistry...bomb sniffer tech...anyone showing up with the rong shit in their shoes would beep the machine....but ignore stinky feet...that was a hell of a feat......

That 5 year job experience showed me the difference between men and boys, and the letters had little to do with it.....
