Is that when they judge your performance?

No. This is the board that reviews student issues such as dismissals due to bad grades or plagiarism/cheating charges. I'm on the board.

Eww, don't think I'd like to do that. It could influence kids lives forever, and possibly, not in a good way.

Well Kermie, there is a saying, "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."
If students decide to perform acts such as plaglarism, it is only fair they land in front of a board (like the one Liz sits on). Why should one student spend countless hours researching a subject and read through so many works to learn, then write a good paper, when another student will copy someone else's work? Academic honesty is huge in colleges and should not be taken lightly, not by professors and especially students.

I don't like to do it. It's a necessity. If they are before the board, they have messed up in some way, and this is their "day in court."

Sometimes there are "honest mistakes" or bad times in their lives (perhaps they failed all their classes in a semester due to stress from various reasons), and sometimes there are worse issues.

Regardless, it's not a pleasant experience to be before the board or to sit on the board, I assure you!

Hi Laurie and Liz. I was just thinking back to my (ughhh) high school days. I was a big mature guy and very independent, and I hated the stupid kiddy type rules like putting your hand up to go to the washroom, etc, and power tripping teachers. It had nothing to do with the curriculum. I butted heads enough that I got fed up, dropped out and enrolled in university as a per course pay as you go, and then was accepted as a full time student. I graduated before my cohorts from high school.
My point is that all the rules don't suit all the students, that's all.

Afternoon Kermie,
I know what you mean. But like Liz stated, those boards are a necessity.

How was your weekend?

No, its not that kind of board, its the kind to see if the student should be able to remain enrolled due to cheating or outside forces that affected the student such as an A student who out of the blue gets a failing grade. Does the student deserve academic probation so they can pull their grades back up. Or a student who just may not be ready for the commitment college requires (studying vs partying), is that student ready. College is expensive, if the latter is the case, and the student is not ready it may be in his/her best interest to take a semester off and reassess the situation and commitment and expense.

Kudos to Liz, it is not an easy board to sit on (from what my professor told me) as I know a person who failed the comprehensive exam in grad school. Then the board had to decide if he should be able to do them orally or fail and not graduate. The board decided to let him retake the subjects he did poorly on, orally and gave him an extra week to review the material.

Well, I'm just hobbling around, but it's healing pretty good now thanks. Could be a lot worse, it could be winter. At least I can wear sandals in the good weather.

Yes, that's a great way to look at it!

I'm a barefoot type person in the summer. Give me a pair of flip flops in the summer...less is better

Love the summer time!

30% chance locally on Thurs. All bets are off in the meantime as temps soar in the upper 90s. We had a pretty decent squall of soakers last weekend, though.
