This semester I'm taking a Master's class on Globalization. Our assignment last night was to attend an on-campus lecture on diversity given by a visiting professor from Stanford University. The lecture was fine, everything you'd usually expect: "We've come so far, but we have so far to go"..."The future starts with you people in the room"...blah blah blah. What was interesting was that he showed us how this behavior is nothing new...it's been going on in this country for a few hundred years.
　
But what struck me was that before the lecture, a student got up to the lectern and announced (paraphrasing here) that if anyone was upset at what's going on in the world or this country, or if anyone is just upset in generalor knows someone who is, they were organizing a march on Friday...meet at Frog Fountain at noon, etc.
　
And I started thinking: You are attending one of the more prestigious private colleges in the state. TCU is as much like a country club as it is a college. Your expenses are very likely either fully or partially on someone else's dime. All you have to do is study, bang some chicks in the dorm, eat (they do have good food), take the occasional shit and sleep. Life as you know it today couldn't be easier for you. How in God's green earth do you become so "upset."

When I first moved to Texas, we were living in a condominium. There was a lot of infighting and drama between many residents and I foolishly got all caught up in it. Then my Dad had a heart attack. Funny how quickly (and I mean in seconds) all that nonsense dropped off my radar and never reappeared.

I remember the first couple days of Marine Corps boot camp being pretty upset. Nobody really gave a fuk and I turned out to be a responsible adult. I dont really feel too badlly for these little kids.

They imagine that they could choose to work or not work, and live wherever they want, and visit anywhere they want, and they would have top quality healthcare and a nice place to live and everything would be just rosy.

In reality they would live where the government told them to live, they would attend school and get indoctrinated instead of educated, and if they were "college material", instead of being assigned to a farm or labor camp, they would take the courses the government wanted them to take, and be assigned a life-long career. The freedom of movement would be limited to wherever your assigned location was, where you lived and worked. And there would be no hope whatsoever of ever getting out of this system because it was the same everywhere. Except for very special areas where you and your ilk weren't allowed, where the ruling class lived in splendor. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Unfortunately today we have multiple generations that have been raised in a protected "You my, child are more important than anyone or anything" house, the health of a loved one or even their own health will have little impact on them.
You wouldn't believe the number of calls we make where Mom or Dad are having life threatening issues and the children are sitting on the couch with Xbox or the cell phones, and hardly even acknowledge the fact we are there.
