Then it started making more noise. Noticed the blower fan had a wobble.

Turned it back on and listened to a horrible sound as the fan hub spun against the outer blades.

My friend Jack ( my A/C heater guy ) was on a commercial call a couple hours away .

Looked up the part on Amazon and the freaking fan lists for almost $190.

Cleaned it off , grabbed some EvaDur welding rod and TIG welded the hub to the fan blades.( actually closer to brazing with that low temp rod )

It's working great and my replacement blower fan wheel ( $90 off ebay) will be here Thursday
They call those a squirrel cage, and yes, they can go out of balance and self destruct. I did a couple of repairs on mine back in VA, but it was easier just getting the cage.

A mouse got into our furnace and ****ed up the blower fan pretty good. Called the guy, who didn't believe me that the blower fan went out. Naturally, he didn't have any in stock, because they never fail ( ). Took a week to get a new one in. Oh, and this all happened in January, during the coldest winter in years.

Something similar with our water heater going on January 1st. Local plumbing company wanted $300 just to come out and look so I stuck my hand under the faucet to gauge how rough showering would be if I shopped around…

$2,400 later, I’m guessing I owned a new, $500 water heater but I had hot water again.

Gallon jugs of water heated in micro work very well, doesn't take as much as you'd think for a quick shower. Alternatively use a 5 gallon bucket with hot water from stove and a scoop. Learn some tricks when don't have power for a week after hurricanes or ice storms. Also comes in handy when something breaks and no way can fix quickly. Yer welk.

If we really want to stop global warming, then we have to dump refrigerant into the atmosphere to cool it down! Duh! Everyone should be venting their freon to save the planet.

Didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night but I'm pretty sure low ozone levels allowing ultraviolet radiation through to the surface of the planet has nothing to do with atmospheric temperatures. It's more of a skin cancer thing.

The 30lbs of freon that was $320.00 last year is running $750-$800 currently.

The coil is $320. I do it twice and still come out ahead.

Complication: The coil can't be delivered until August 17th.

*Refrigerant.

Freon® is a brand name from DuPont for what is inside cans and drums = refrigerant, notably; dichlorodifluoromethane and chlorodifluoromethane (12 and 22).

*Solder is low heat with silver based materials.
Brazing is higher heat with copper based materials (mixed with silver)

I suggest aero uses soldering so he don't burn his house down, or melt copper pipes into ingots while attempting to braze.

Propane is also classified as a refrigerant, Aero should use that. Makes finding a leak with a match real easy. Then he'll know right where to solder.

Will a repair with a soldering iron withstand the pressure required in his AC system? Issues with using dissimilar metals?

Ideally, they are brazed joints. The connection I need to make is on the low/liquid side. Higher silver content means a harder joint. I have never brazed before, but the recommendation that nitrogen be flowing through the joint as it is brazed, creates another hurdle. I'm starting to get scared off by the job.

I also considered hacking at it and if it doesn't work, I'll call a repair company and tell them the last guy that worked on it left it that way and walked off the job. (No need to know that I was the last guy that worked on it).
