Ignore him, tell him if he wants it..he can bust his ass digging up sod, pouring quickrete, floating it out, putting in the backboard and rim...and painting it/lining it....that you will fund it, but the labor wil lbe his own..

After an hour of taking up sod with a flat shovel, he will lose interest...

If he wants it bad enough he won't even balk.

One day I told my dad I wanted a pool..he told me if I pulled the sod up, leveled it out, and prepared the 24 foot, footprint..he'd pay for the rest. so I went out and dug about a 4" deep hole in the yard, 24 feet across, leveled it out, sprayed weed killer and tamped it all down....

A week later ,we were swimming.....

It took me about 3 days to get that hole dug...but it was worth it, it saved my dad alot of $$ in prep costs and it showed I was committed to the cause.

That's unfortunate, my Dad is more like Red's. That type of upbringing has served me well. I tell all my nephews that have zero mechanical/labor skills, "you better make a ton of money because you will be paying someone to do everything for you your whole life".

I guess I was just raised differently. Hell, I helped prepare and pour our driveway at our house in Illinois when I was about 7 years old. I painted the new garage at that age too. Well, the parts I could reach anyway. And I had to do it right too. I had to mow the lawn every week for years, no excuses. Had other duties also. We all did. And they didn't pay us to do them, although my parent's would occasionally give me some sort of a small allowance, like a couple of dollars a week.
