That would not promote their cause. At all.

If they shot down a passenger plane and killed civilians, it will absolutely not bring sympathy to their side. They need allies. This will not help them. It does the opposite.

Iran had no intention of kill Americans yesterday. They were saber rattling. Nothing more. if they shot down a plane and killed almost 200 people, that was a monumental mistake that they are not likely to confess. At least not willingly.

Iran shot that plane out of the sky, whether mistakenly or not. Commercial airliners don't just nosedive without warning, news outlets are reporting that it happened so quickly that there was no radio transmission from the pilot or crew whatsoever.

I was only considering the "infidels are infidels, who cares?" aspect, but you are correct, for any global sympathy, that would be a bad move.
