Default I want another pistol...

I have a Kahr 40 cal, a 12 gauge, and a .22 rifle. I keep the Kahr on my night stand, but what I really want is a "cowboy" pistol, like a Peacemeaker and such. I don't want to spend the $3,000-$12,000 an original costs.

Here's one that interests me, but I know nothing about this pistol:
Cimarron US Cavalry Revolver CA514M00 45 LC For Sale

Any suggestions?

Cimarron, I believe is only a distributor and that pistol is manufactured by Uberti. That said, Uberti's quality is top shelf. It IS good stuff made in Italy.

First off, I think the 7.5 inch barrel is a bit much for general use, and you would probably be better served with a 5.5 inch barreled Single Action Pistol.

My recommendation however would be for a Ruger Vaquero for a few reasons. Number one being they are sturdier guns and would be better suited for hotter ammunition than the Italian Clones. Also, they employ a transfer bar system, which would allow you to safely load all six in the cylinder...traditional SA pistols were only loaded with five and the hammer was placed uncocked on an empty cylinder chamber.

Another good thing about the Vaquero is that some of them come in 'Convertible' models with an extra cylinder that would allow you to fire cheaper 45 ACP cartridges in the pistol (kind of a moot point if you roll your own though).

Ruger also makes the Blackhawk, which is a Single Action pistol with all of the features listed above, except it has adjustable sights. They are actually a bit less in cost than the Vaquero as well.

Your only two options, outside of a real Colt SAA are Ruger's and the Italian Clones.

Good Luck

A couple more thoughts...

While 45 Long Colt is an outstanding cartridge, it can get rather pricey to shoot if you aren't a reloader. You may consider a revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, because that would allow you to fire cheaper 38 Special ammo for target practice, and potential ammo availability problems wouldn't be as significant as the 45 Long Colt, as it is a more 'popular' cartridge.

Also, the Vaquero Convertible models in .357 come with a 9mm cylinder, so that really opens up your possibilities as far as ammo goes.

Another thing of note is that some of the Italian Clones also use the transfer bar system, Beretta's Stampede for example (actually manufactured by Uberti), so that's something to think about.

It really all depends on how historically accurate you want to be, or if you don't care about that stuff at all and just want to shoot the thing...

Colt also made a Single Action pistol called the 'Cowboy' I believe, which are significantly less costly than their traditional SAA pistols, it also uses the transfer bar system.
