Burn the probes is a term I had not heard before. But that's ok, while I work on Strikes Thud, I'll send my Air Force guy to go check the egt probes! |

You have to go back to ancient technology that I get to work on. We have probes in the aft section of the engine that you hook the jet cal up to, to make sure the gauges are calibrated. It cooks them to a known good temp and you bounce that off the egt gauge to figure out if you have an engine running hot, or just a gauge out of cal. We didn't have probes as such on the B-1B, so it is likely you have something completely different on the CFM's. I'm kickin' it old school!!

We've never had a high egt gripe that I could remember. So I was curious, because I don't remember doing anything with egt probes, I looked them up. Our CFM engines have 4 probes each eng. Each probe has two thermocouples. The probes are installing on the Low Pressure Turbine Case at the 2, 5, 7:30, & 10 o'clock positions.

"Strike" Humph. Run off the end of the runway after landing without flaps just once, and you get a new nickname. You try landing a lead sled without hydraulics, and see how you do. Just lucky there wasn't any ordinance on the hardpoints.
Aircraft or man, the hydraulics are iffy at this vintage. |
