Default Another difference between guys and gals.

My wife works at a store that, among other things, sells outdoor lighting of the higher-end sort. Much nicer than the Lowes Depot stuff. And she gets a 40% discount. We both thought it would be a nifty idea to put in new LED lighting outside, as our old lighting was pretty craptacular, and the lights by the driveway had all been driven over enough times that there was just no saving them.

We have some pretty awesome landscape guys who said they will install it for us, and my wife asked them for a plan. They made one, she picked out a bunch of lights, and then told me it was going to be $4800 just for the lights. That was after her discount. Uh, no honey. I looked at the plan and it was total overkill, so we modified it and also she picked out some less costly lights made by the same high-end company. Now it was like $2200 or so, much more reasonable. OK, let's do it.

All along my one overriding question was "Where are the power supplies/transformers going to be located? Are they of a high enough capacity to handle additional lights later?" I asked this question at least five times until I finally got a satisfactory answer. My wife assured me the woman she worked with was a lighting expert who did this stuff all the time. Don't worry, it's handled.

Fast forward to yesterday. There's a big pile of lights and stuff in our garage. The guys show up to begin installation. First thing the head guy asks is "OK, now where are we putting the transformers?" I show them the two places. "Let's see them." I look for them. There're 40 boxes. Not one of them have a transformer in them. Both my wife and the lady who placed the order forgot to include them. They are now supposed to be here Monday.

There's no way a guy would have forgotten the power supply, it would have been the very first thing on the order. Supposedly it was just a simple oversight. Yah.

He's got $2,200 worth of lights installed and no way to power them. I believe you are legally prohibited from using the term bright in this context.

Honestly, I would have gotten more involved had I even had a whiff of an idea they'd forget to order the transformers. Just a few minutes ago I verified their size. One is 300W and the other is 60W, should be adequate and allow for a few more lights in the future. The small one is only powering 5 lights, the big one something like 30. Each light is between 5 and 10 watts, all LEDs.

Baller. My entire LED yard light circuit totals 10 watts. It's not that I'm cheap, it's just that I'm... OK, yeah, I'm cheap.

My old lights were pretty cheap and they were incandescents, constantly burning out bulbs, throwing the GFCI in the garage, and getting ran over by people trying to back out of my (very easy to back out of) driveway. The new lights by the driveway are flush to the ground, they are very cool and can be driven over no problem.

This is a flush-mount light by the driveway.

And this is a weird one that is pointed at a rock.

This is a typical perimeter light.

The uplights are strange looking I think.

And this bird thinks it's a hummingbird.

Those are all nice!

This is a flush-mount light by the driveway.

That's a nice one. I would definitely drive over that.

And this is a weird one that is pointed at a rock.

I'd knock that spittoon over onto that one.

This is a typical perimeter light.

I would kick that in anger after I smacked my noggin on the bottom of a fender.

Wait until Cyber starts getting angry phone calls from the local airport telling him to turn all that shit off, because it's confusing the pilots who are trying to land.

Are the transformers included in the $2200 price, or do they bring it back up to $4800?

I have no idea what this stuff costs. Outdoor lighting is frowned upon around here. Spoils our view of the Milky Way. If some one leaves for a vacation and leaves their porch light on, people will go over and unscrew the bulb.
