Default Home network storage

My wife has outgrown the memory on her laptop, and refuses to use the external drive I bought her (pink to match the laptop ).

Anywho, so I want (am being forced) to set up a network storage solution. I'm thinking 3-4 TB should be PLENTY, at least for a couple of years.

I saw a Seagate GoFlex home 3TB NAS with mixed reviews. Any thoughts or experience from the resident O.T. IT nerds?

i just recently picked up a seagate 2T powered external for $80 at Frys. ive had a 640GB USB powered (great for portability) from seagate for a while now. never had a problem with either one.

on the flipside, my co-worker recently bought a seagate go-flex 320GB that was defective right out the box. he had to send it in under warranty to get it fixed.

luck of the draw i guess...

also read that they could be a problem if youre using a mac

Replace her internal hard drive with a larger capacity

And if that's her in your avatar, I'll gladly put something larger in...

What kind of budget are you looking at? The best thing on the market right now is probably the Drobo but they aren't terribly cheap.

You have any desktops connected to the home network? Slap a couple 2-TB drives in there and call it a day. I've got 6 of them in my home workhorse.

I went with a Thecus N4100Pro. It's been pretty good. Great as a network storage drive. Not as great as a USB print server...

I don't know that I'd go that far. Personally, I'm in the market for a QNap appliance right now. Something like this. I like the fact that I can use it not only as a NAS, but as an iSCSI target for both my computers and for any of the big three virtualization vendor datastores. That's without getting into all the multimedia and backup functionality that's baked into it. YMMV.

That was actually my first thought. However, I don't really use my desktop that much anymore except for music while in the study. I'm looking to stay under $400, I mean, I won't be streaming anything, just need a file share.

Thanks for the input dudes!

I tried using the NAS feature of my Netgear wireless router (a USB connection to an external drive) and it SUCKS due to the limitation of roughly 100 GB. Oh, you can plug in a larger drive (I tried a 1 TB drive) but it won't show any folder containing more than about 100 GB. My music collection alone is four times that at brought it to its knees.

Probably need to check to see if they have new firmware for it. Supposedly they were aware of this and working on a fix...
