I'd guess that providing a defense that will survive an appeal, but without going so far as to get the guy off, can be a delicate balance.

Besides the large amount of money defense lawyers in the private sector make I think the public defenders start out to actually help the wrongly accused and those who cannot afford high price lawyers but they get assigned cases and don't get to pick and choose.

Getting stuck with someone like this as a client would be enough for me to quit for sure, can't imagine the monsters they have to deal with and th e secrets they have to keep.
