My granddaughter had a small part in the Nutcracker. We just happened to be seated behind the only family wearing masks. It was sad to see a little boy forced to wear that damn thing on his face for two hours.

It was my first ballet and most likely my last. I guess I’m not the sophisticated type.

I mean, it's possible that one or several of them were sick, or recovering from a cold, Wu flu, or even allergies, and just wanted to be considerate.....it's possible, but doubtful that the whole family was or had been sick all at the same time, and just wanted to be considerate.

Edit: It's also possible that one of them has some kind of compromised immunity, and they're doing it for the protection of that family member, although unless it's a respirator fit tested N-95, it's probably not helping that much anyway.

I do believe the masks are effective with the flu virus so maybe that's why ?

This new variant - omicron is starting to sounds more like a big fat donut when it comes to sickness. No symptoms, no deaths, no mass casualty...just you get sick and likely get over it.

It was just weird the family would put their son in such a risky environment; the ride to the theater.

Worse than codpiece, the buns hanging out wasn’t something I wanted to see.

I've read some articles that suggest these mask mandates can actually cause illness. Reusing dirty masks, touching the face adjusting, and even reducing the body's immune system by not allowing it to be exposed to bugs regularly.

N95 mask worn properly, and discarded after each interaction with each person, in line with proper protocols to gain protection from that type of mask, yes, you will gain some protection. Walking around all day with the same N95 mask on, coming into contact with all kinds of folks, and breathing in through a mask that has likely been contaminated for hours, well, you're free to do that if you want, but I won't join you.
