We should adopt a no bread or water policy for illegal immigrants next. Want to apply for asylum? Fill out the form and return back over the border. We will find you if you qualify. Appear without paperwork? Get on this bus... it runs 3 times a day and goes 20 miles inside Mexico so you never have to worry about any undocumented alien dying while in detention here... if they never stay overnight they can expire elsewhere.
They are an enemy and we should offer no aid or succor to them regardless of how much pressure the bleeding hearts apply crying "humanitarianism". Get here legally or get out on the next transport South. |

As to the main article, I see both sides. Discipline is absolutely necessary for people in harm's way, like sailors on a ship, but I could see a Captain Queeg taking that too far. So it's a balance between maintaining order vs. not being a dick just for the sake of being a dick.
If you are meting out ticky tack punishments to otherwise good sailors, to the point that they don't reenlist when they otherwise would have, and would have been welcomed, then maybe you're going too far. In other words, maybe somewhere between McHale's Navy and the Caine Mutiny would probably be best. I do think it's in the Navy's benefit to mete out institutional punishments for some off duty infractions. Bar fight? Maybe handle that in house vs. ruining a sailor's life with a criminal conviction. |

In the over twenty years in the Navy I only knew of one instance of a Sailor getting three days of Bread and Water. Mind you they get all the bread and water they wanted. This clown did some pretty nasty stuff overseas and probably deserved more that the 3 days.
He actually cleaned his act up and turned out to be a pretty good sailor after that incident. We all make mistakes, sometimes people just need a little different punishment to wake them up. In response to Keel Hauling, there were a few I wish we could have done that to during my time in. I would have gladly pulled the line from side to side for them. |
