Default Just solved a problem for a Fortune 200 company

Engaged with a huge, well known client doing Tech Debt Remediation.

Inherited a process that took 60,000 MS, our dev team refactored the code down to 48,000 MS using coding best practices (a win).

Today, getting creative I found the true root cause of the issue and I got them down to 3,529 MS. Client is over the moon.

I was always unsure of my ability being in the "bigs" when I got into this industry, but today validates that I have what it takes to make a difference for clients of this size.

No...60 seconds to 48 seconds to 3 seconds.

Client has already identified our firm as the best SI ever and is asking us to plot out the next several years worth of work. We have stood out in a big way to all that came before.

I got creative, entered in a back door, and figured out why shit was taking so long. My creative efforts took a 60 second transaction that caused errors down to a 3 second transaction with no errors.

eh, efficient coding is overrated....

wild guess: the previous "standard" was good enough because of some other hardware constraint that no longer exists.

Yes, I engaged Knooger for the back door coding.

At the end of the day, in this industry crowded with offshore talent, and people that have direct skills, but no depth of experience, my 35 years of coding, consulting, data experience allowed me to creatively analyze why shit wasn't working and test a solution. This industry does not have a lot of people with 35 years of consulting experience. It was an extremely validating day for me.

My firm is very smitten with me and has been showering me with off cycle bonuses and grooming me for director level position. Kinda hoping that happens in the next promotion cycle in May. That's another 6-figures on top of what I already make.

Watched a movie last night called Hummingbird with Salma Hayek that talked about that topic.

I know exactly what you mean, when you say "offshore 'talent'". Congrats, and best wishes for climbing that next rung.

Good for you!

I know you just updated your display system, did you go with 27" or 32" monitors, and flat or curved?

Congratulations. Sounds like you are having as much fun as me throughout my 30 year IT career.

I can relate to your experience. I always wondered how I could get paid so well for solving puzzles though coding and managing databases. Sometimes stressful, but mostly fun playing with expensive toys.

My biggest puzzle was a large file pointer problem. The database software was the issue so I had to code around it until a patch was available.

Worst issue in my career was trying to recover data after an employee installed the backup removable disk pack into a bad drive. I did a lot of file rebuilding from the files I was able to recover from the damaged disk and archives. He damn near lost most of the company’s data.
