I have several cake recipes that specify which oil. Crisco or wesson. I like corn oil for frying okra, green tomatoes and chicken. I use olive oil too. Buttercream icing calls for solid crisco.

I'm going to try to get off my diabetes med (metformin) in December. I'm sure I will still need the ACE inhibitor for mild hypertension though. Of course, with no metformin, I will need to be even more vigilant about sugar intake, so no buttercream icing in my forseeable future.

Best of luck to J!

Did he go about it the right way? It doesn't seem like it, but do you realize what you are doing when you "bring your own parts" and toss them at a shop to install?

It is quite simply not worth my time to install whatever it is you decided to buy. Maybe or maybe not true with you, but the majority of "I brought my own parts" people bought the cheap bullshit from Ebay or Amazon that takes 3 times as long to install because none of it fits worth a damn. Inevitably, you are also going to be calling and blaming me when it performs like shit or something breaks.

Knock the mechanic all you want, but know that if you are the "I brought my own parts" guy, you are every bit as much to blame.

I had a guy bring me an "oil change kit" for a motorcycle the other day when he dropped it off. Normal oil change on a bike is about $89.99 depending on what exactly it is. He said "The kit cost $65 so it should be $25.

I assure you that $25 is not worth it. Feel free to go elsewhere and let me know what they tell you.

Bringing parts to a mechanic is no different than bringing a steak into a restaurant, handing it to the waiter and telling them to cook it for you for 75% off.

Out of curiosity, while I agree that this does seem high, what would you expect him to charge you for a brake job for which you brought your own parts?

Doing pads and rotors should be 2.0 an axle.

I wouldn't argue too much against that.

I would (and do) also add an UP FRONT minute by minute kicker for any issues related to bring in parts. Pretty simple. I know what it takes to install MY parts and my estimates are based on that. If yours take longer due to a parts issue, you pay for it.

FIL uses then for brakes, apparently tightening the caliper bracket bolts is important... Who knew.
Just dumb luck only took out the rim, they paid for hotel and meals since he was traveling when it came apart. Took a day to get a rim and get it back on the road.

I've been doing the "bring my own parts" since we started going there about 8 years ago. Yes, it came from ebay but were ALWAYS AC Delco parts. Never a problem before and I asked before we did it.

I would also do some fabricating and altering parts for him when he need it too. ( face parts in my lathe , rework the cones for the mopar "posi units", some mill work). Always dirt cheap , just enough to cover material costs to help him out.

It USED to be a one hand washes the other. No warning on the skyrocketing price either.
