Default eviction moratorium, landlord says tenants buying boats

Landlord out $24,000 in rent due to eviction moratorium, says tenants buying boats

Property owner says he's still bound by law to maintain properties while funds dry up.

https://www.foxnews.com/media/evicti...nt-coronavirus

A North Carolina landlord says he is out $24,000 in unpaid rent from tenants, while one renter bought three boats over the course of the eviction moratorium just as the CDC announced a new ban that will last until October 3.

Buddy Shoup, who owns 35 properties across the state, said that he has been forced to maintain the properties and hemorrhage costs while the federal government slowly dribbles out rental assistance, of which only 7% has been doled out to renters in need.

‘[The money] was used, they went and bought brand new boats, but I mean, you know in a time of crisis like what we’ve been through, you’re evidently getting money from somewhere, but it’s not getting to me," said Shoup.

Those very same tenants allegedly contacted Shoup when their air-conditioning failed in the middle of the summer.

Shoup was legally required to make the $4,500 repair on the residence but said he did not receive any money from the tenants or the government to cover the additional cost.

"It goes way beyond the loss of rental income, we’re still bound by county rules and laws," added Shoup. "We have to maintain the property."

Shoup said that he oftentimes sends tenants who cannot pay rent to local programs, which are funded by city and county taxpayer dollars, in order to acquire some form of assistance.

Yet, when it comes to federal rental assistance, the North Carolina landlord said he hasn’t seen any indication that the money is reaching struggling renters.

In June, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to allow the CDC to continue its moratorium until July 31 and said that any future extensions would be in Congress' hands.

But on Tuesday, the Biden administration announced a new targeted eviction ban to replace the one that expired on Saturday. The president said he spoke with constitutional scholars and even conceded that "the bulk of the constitutional scholars say it’s not likely to pass constitutional muster."

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention drafted a new eviction moratorium aimed at protecting tenants in counties with "substantial and high levels of community transmission" of COVID-19, affecting roughly 90% of the U.S. population.

Time to sell some property or not renew leases.

And since when does the CDC get to mandate laws? This should be in the courts. Why should the property owner take it hard in the shorts and some free loader demand he deals with it?

Wouldn’t it be just awful if Karma Lightning were to hit those boats, and also the properties as long as they’re fully insured?

Best to show up with somebody dressed like a priest with a box of Holy Gadgets to perform the much needed Exorcism on the property. Use movie magic to bloody the hell out of him before he runs screaming away from the property. Some random weird flashing lights at night caps it and nonrenters are on their way quickly.

Better be buying houseboats because when the landlord fails to make his mortgage payments the bank will foreclose and these tenants are going to be looking for a roof to put over their heads. Learned that the hard way about 40 years ago with an alcoholic landlord who drank all the rent money.

According to Waters no one will stop them from making law. The Supreme Court ruled that it was not legal for them to do so, but the Biden Admin ignored their ruling. Typical day under Dem leadership.

The 1978 incident at the San Francisco City Hall did some good.

Of course they are. This just show how out of touch DC is with real, everyday problems normal Americans face everyday.

It's the same thing as the EPA making shit up bypassing the Constitution by Congress not making laws. Our government is broken and broken badly.

Imagine if we could somehow come up with a system of equal branches of government with check and balances so unelected bureaucrats can't make up shit anytime they please. I read about a country that used to be like that and it flourished for a 100 years or so. I wonder what happened to that country? Rumor is it died in 1865.

If a landlord can't kick them out for not paying rent what make you think a bank, especially the big banks that are in bed with government, will be able to kick them out?

I'd sell the shit to my wife and have all leases canceled immediately, rather it be empty then shibags living there anyway. Millions of landlords are going to lose their houses to not fault of their own, lets not forget the tax man been getting his money though.
**** the CDC they shouldn't be allowed to make decisions like this period.

As you said "in bed with government". Government and their chosen lackies are exempt from rules/laws which apply to we the people (killing, extortion, kidnapping, theft and all without consequences).

For whatever reason they don't want private ownership of property. How many homes did they end up with by disallowing loans to be filtered based on the ability to pay? How many lost their homes to the bank because of that big housing bubble? What happened to those properties when those banks promptly evaporated? They know what they're doing and you should too because it's their standard method of operation.
