Default Story from the pistol range today

so i was up at the pistol range in Los Alamos, to repair a broken, portable 6 foot long wall, and to build 5 new 8 foot long walls. we use these to create rooms and hallways for action shooting, including IDPA and USPSA matches held each month.

I'm working along, and a guy comes over, with his pistol, which he says has so far fired exactly one shot, and he can't get the trigger to reset. hmmm.....

It's a Springfield Hellcat, small compact polymer frame pistol, striker fired.

we get the slide off the frame, and the trigger pivot pin, the transfer bar, and the trigger return spring are all there, but there is so much gunk, that it doesn't move freely.

"got any oil?" i ask.

"no"

what kind of dumbass doesn't bring basic stuff like cleaner solution, oil, and a basic cleaning kit with them to the range?

I was not shooting today, so my gear was at home (but i did have my first aid kit!)

turns out it's his daily carry pistol (not anymore today), and he hadn't cleaned it after shooting about 200 rounds a month or so ago, but had been dry firing it.

clean it up, lube it up, try again another day. i'll stick with my Beretta 92G.

Last time I went to the range to shoot a bunch of closet toys I decided to shoot my carry gun that I had on my hip for 3 or 4 years.

The first shot was hysterical.
A giant plume of dirt and dust and dead skin cells exploded in the air in a spectacular fashion.

I stuck it back the holster and still haven’t fired it since.

Youngsters these days seem to think not cleaning your gun is something to brag about. Nothing wrong with that considering how many innocent lives have been spared by a gun failing to fire. Lots of these stories to be heard.

I keep my guns clean but I don't drag all this stuff to the range. Never had a problem with any of my guns that required attention at that immediate time on the range. If it did, I'd just shoot one of the other guns and rectify the problem when at home.

We don't do the range much, maybe to try something we don't already own. We prefer the mountains where nobody is around. I have plenty of targets to set up a pretty good range and we take a lot of stuff, rifle and pistol. Thing with the pay/regulated range is newbies going in there doing stupid stuff. You look around and see all the negligent discharge bullet holes, nope not for me. Then there's strict rules, they wont even let you drink beer there while shooting, what's up with that?

Calm down, I'm kidding on the last comment...

As a person that for many years was a RO and firearms instructor I rarely carried cleaning stuff to the range. My guns are ready to use! What I do always carry is basic gun smith tools (just in case), tighten up a screw occasionally and rods to pop out a slug if a load had no powder only primer power ETC.

Having the tools and knowledge let me help out many shooters over the years.

I find a can of liquid wrench before and after shooting does wonders. Some friends shoot non-jacketed ammo and it works very well cleaning out the lead deposits, too.

I hate to admit this, but maybe Porter @Hardluck might know a thing or two on the subject.

Weird though, around here proof loads with my 44 mag attracted spectators from a whole other set of benches 30 yards away. I think they were never exposed to something like that before and wanted to see what kind of gun it was.

Only gun I move away from on the line is a 40SW. Just can't begin to imagine the agony of shooting one indoors during a self-defense situation without ear plugs. Loud beyond all reason. Holy crap.

Pistol pits are for pistols. Rifle range is for rifles.

Pretty much the same on any range I've seen though sighting in a new rifle scope is generally allowed on pistol targets.

That separate range I referenced in my other post was restricted to competitive target shooting, or those who tested for fine accuracy with a handgun due to homes behind the berm. I certified for it because berms were on three sides and that came in real handy on a windy day

thanks.

we've had a bullet enter a barrel, and continue going around inside it for several seconds, makes a really interesting noise.

maybe we'll just stick to the wood based walls i build. bullets go right thru them, which is good.
