I think it's more the shift in interests. The days of only having 3 channels and the Game of the Week have gone. Today's parents not letting their kids play sports is starting to reach televised sports.

It was only fairly recently that professional athletes made the kinds of outrageous salaries that they do. Before free agency hit in the early 70's, only true superstars made good money. It wasn't at all unusual for a pro ball player to work at a sporting goods or hardware store in the off-season to make ends meet. I think Ty Cobb was given a hunting rifle for being Baseball's MVP one year. A hunting rifle. That's it.

Greed on the part of the owners and the players changed all that.
