WOW good news at work
So they made the big announcement today at work. They shut our pot lines down last year and said the pot rooms were closed, not curtailed. Things drug along last year with the Alcoa splitting into two companies, Alcoa Corp and Arconic. Our site stayed with Alcoa Corp, even though we are the only rolling mill asset they own, the rest is Aluminia, Refining, Power and Smelting.
Today the President of our business unit which includes smelting, announced they will be restarting 3 of our 5 pot lines by 2Q 2018. It will take about a year to refurbish and get things right to start them back up. This means our power rate will be drastically lower in our rolling mills which means we should be able to turn a much better profit. Looks like they will be hiring about 275 people back. The company had laid off about 300 when the pot rooms shut down. Altogether there were 600 jobs lost when we shut them down. Does make things feel a little better at work knowing we will be getting molten metal instead of being a cold metal Aluminum rolling mill |

As a machinist, this makes me happy. Not only is a USA based metal producer going back on line, the upgrades create or keep more jobs and the investment in the upgrade also translate into better profits. |

Wait a minute....how are jobs coming back? Does Trump have some kind of magic wand?
OR could it be that stable, reasonable energy costs and reduced regulation really does work? Nah, must be a magic wand. |

The three lines they are starting will give our side of the plant a much needed break on the cost of power and metal. We have our own power plant which has been running one unit at 60% power to supply us with High Temp Water for our process and power. They use the condensate off one of the turbines to circulate the water to us at about 400 degrees and 400 PSI. We use this to heat our tanks instead of steam or electric heaters. We only use about 30% of the power from the one unit and sell the rest of the power on the grid for a loss. With the POT lines running we will need all three units from the power plant to melt the aluminium and provide power to us.
They are already shuffling people to the smelter and getting the ball rolling pretty quickly. The next six months are going to be living hell trying to get people qualified in new positions. |
