bilmem Oops, wrong part sent

One of the guys I get parts from made an expensive mistake. I make a set of adapters for a guy to put a different engine in a Cub Cadet lawn and garden tractor so he could change over to the newer constant velocity driveshaft. That guy contacted my parts guy and paid for a CV driveshaft.

The top picture is after I shorten the CV driveshaft to fit. The track ball end bolts to the engine adapter and the left side attaches to the hydro pump (rear). The adapter I make is bolted to it.

What I got in the mail today was bottom picture. It's the old style driveshaft for a manual transmission cub.

The old style has a value of about $50 -$60. It'll cost about $11 to send it back.

Here's where the expensive mistake was made. The top style CV driveshaft is worth about $130 and he just spent over $60 to send it overseas. It was mailed this past Friday and has already left the states.

oops

WTF is a constant velocity drive shaft?? how does it differ from a regular drive shaft?? engine/power in at X rpm.....drive shaft turns with it, and other end of shaft does the same.....

they ALL are CV by my reckoning......

Here you go Gene, a cub cadet driveline lesson

Top picture is a standard , "ragjoint" driveshaft. Right side plate bolts to the engine and the second picture is a replacement pump ( rear ) flange that I fabricate.

The driveshaft and the coupler are bolted on at 90* to help smooth out vibrations. Once you get into the higher horsepower and especially with diesel power, that style wears quickly causing vibration.

I make adapters for the older Cub Cadets to use the newer CV style driveshafts. ( third picture) That version pictured is for a Kubota engine and a smooth ( not splined ) pump shaft and also in the picture is a support for the plastic fan.

Fourth picture is the CV driveshaft disassembled. The driveshaft is splined on both ends. The small diameter piece attaches to the driveshaft and there are four balls which rotate against the spline piece and are captured between two end caps. The end caps are either bolted to the engine or the pump adapter, The ball bearings provide a smoother input of power compared to the rag joint style.

Fifth pic is a fully assembled stock CV driveshaft.
