Default A Short and Sad Story
Since my wife retired, she has taken up a few hobbies. One is quilt making and another is working as a volunteer at the hospital. I noticed she was making some very small (about one square foot) quilts. I thought they were placemats, and I asked her if they were for the gift shop run by the volunteers at the hospital. They sell a lot of hand made goods there as a fund raiser.

She said they were for the hospital, but not for the gift shop and they weren't placemats.

She explained that when a baby is stillborn in the Family Birth Center, if the parents so desire, they are handed the baby and given some private time with it during their time of grief. The little quilts are to wrap the baby in as they are handed to the parents and for a keepsake to take home.

And then she just continued sewing. Someday I hope to be as wonderful a person as my wife. I am so glad I found and married her.

That's a great thing she does. My mother lost twins like that. That was in 1971 and there was nothing like that to comfort her. I am proud of my 17 year old daughter. She spent the better part of a month and a half knitting scarves and hats for the less fortunate for Christmas.

My best friend lost his only son and he asked me to hold the pictures for many years. They were too painful for him to look at.
It haunts him to this day as he will probably never have a child.

Really amazing what your wife is doing to help others at such a painful time of loss.

She spent most of her career in the Birth Center. At least most of the time it's a happy place. She also enjoyed working in ICU where she could be a companion to a lonely terminally ill person so they did not have to die alone.

My roommate several years ago lost her son to SIDS, which in a way is even more insidious since the parents actually get to spend some time with their child before losing them suddenly.

This is a great thing your wife is doing!
