Default [Home Improvement] kitchen project underway

this year's big project is a new kitchen. the existing one is small, dirty, poor quality, and without any redeeming features other than the available room.

first up, take out the old island:

it took about an hour to take it out.

the bucket covers the electrical line.

time to remove some floor tiles that will be in the way. yep, new floor tiles are also part of the scope.

time to build new knee wall.

plenty of outlets now!!

time for drywall, mud, and tape.

prime and paint:

and finally, time to put the new cabinets in place. will get countertop installed in a bit. still deciding on that.

cabinets were made by me in my shop, out of pre-finished maple plywood, 30" deep, with full extension drawers (28" glides). 3 drawers installed now, have a 4th for each cabinet that will be installed later. still deciding on the doors and drawer fronts too.

the long wall of the island measures 120 inches (that's 10 feet). lots of space for cookies!!

more later when i have more to show. now it's back to the shop to make more cabinets for the rest of the kitchen.

I wonder how big a beam it would take to span that. reason I even mention it is I have a entry way closet that is the support for the roof that I'd like to take out and make a "great room"

pretty beefy.

house has exposed beams, they measure about 8" wide and about 10" deep.

you'd likely be looking at a serious steel I beam or engineered wood beam. $$$$$$$$$

And you can't have too many electrical outlets along the counter.

No sinks or appliances in the island?
Are you putting an upper small counter on top of the wall for a bar area? We did that at a girl freinds house. Matched the counter top and it comes in real handy.
Very nice work Douglas.

I'm remodeling our kitchen as well. Taking a wall out for more room, new cabinets, countertop, sink, range and much more.

carved columns were existing when we bought the place.

plan to put a 8-10 inch wide counter on top of the wall. likely a massive hunk of 2" thick lumber. possibly walnut.

Very nice work Douglas.
the other half of the kitchen, which is next up, gets a double wall oven, a 36" wide, 5 burner cooktop, new fridge and dishwasher and microwave, sink under the window, and 2 good sized pantries. oh, new exhaust hood too.

all from GE, thanks to redls1gto for his help.

A word of advice, your GE appliances should come with a 5 year warranty. I lost my wine chiller during the last power event-just after the warranty was up. GE prorated me an exact replacement. I just found out that our power company offers an appliance warranty-about $6 a month. I just enrolled.

DAB, in first pix of new cabs...I note you have a typical upper drawer but it seems rather shallow, so limited to what ever.....then to open the door to the second drawer.....seems strange to me....the bottom drawers are great though...still thinking of adding one to a cabinet we have here....whatever wifey poo wants, you know....

NICE WORK DUDE.....what you planning for counter tops??? Granite??

looking forward to what a wood worker works up.....
